You pull 10k with an Avalanche? That's only 1,900 more than it's rated for, so go on ahead on...

When will people across America realize that it is not about how much their engine can pull, but what their pickup can STOP and steer that really matters??? just ranting...

Manufacturers don't rate the vehicle towing capacity based on the engine torque or hp. They rate it based on how much weight it can "balance" to the point it both maintains adequate steer axle traction at all times and stops as required, safely.

Avalanche 2500 4WD is powered by the Vortec 8100, an 8.1-liter V8 rated 320 horsepower and 445 pounds-feet of torque. It comes mated to a 4L85-E heavy-duty automatic transmission, also with overdrive and Tow/Haul mode. In place of the 1500 model's five-link rear suspension with coil springs and automatic load leveling, the 2500 rides on two-stage, heavy-duty leaf springs. Towing capacity is boosted to 11,900 pounds, with a payload rating of 1807 pounds.

sad, I also always liked them. My father and father in law both have avalanches. I was planning on picking one up about 2 years ago. Maybe this fall will finally be my time.

Hardly a truck when it's on a full size truck frame? What makes a truck a truck? The bed? The towing capabilities? The Avalanche has both of those covered. My Dad's has more than served it's purpose hauling stuff that a "truck" can or pulling our boat like a "truck" can.

i thought the first avalanches were cool, i havent really paid too much attention to them though.

of course if you add a lift kit, pushbar, tires and rims most trucks look good.

this is the only truck i ever loved (my brother hit a house with it, it was dads truck)

2002 1500 5.3vortech w/ suicide doors and true dual glasspack exhuast w/ hand controls so dad could drive it.

Post #1. It's all based on the only version that matters to the press and typically the general public, the 1500.

I should've considered the differences since yours got the 8.1L... I don't think they even offer a 2500 anymore and can't see why they ever would've, considering they go out of their way to remind everyone it's built on an SUV frame rather than a heavy duty pickup truck frame.

Regardless what the 1st post says, I really wasn't paying attention because I'd have thought about the 8.1L engine and decided to go look into that. Might've taken a moment too, since the only Avalanche GM talks about now is the 1/2 ton. It didn't help that you chimed into this "1/2 ton Avalanche" thread talking about your 3/4 ton, but didn't say 3/4 ton!

Since they haven't offered it in so long, I just completely forgot about the 3/4 ton version. It's been since 2006, eh?

Ive got sights set on a cadillac ext/ avalanche truck.
Always been a fan, but never had need to go out and buy one.
They are good trucks. i know of one that is almost at the 500k mile mark.
still on stock motor/trans. Ive maintained it since it was new. Belongs to my former boss.
Hes an older guy and cant physically do any mechanics work.
They are good reliable trucks. No doubt about that.

I think its more the platform as a whole as opposed to just the truck. The 5.3 is a great motor.

500k? Goodness... That's roughly 50,000 miles per year if it's a 2002 model. Someone doesn't get much sleep and spends hours daily on the highway...

They were available for sale in mid year 2001. So it's possible that it's been on the road for 11 years. So that would make it 45.45K per year.

Mine has 115K on it. Perfectly reliable. No issues so far.
