For an economical daily driver, I'll take NA all day erry day.
Direct injection solves the fuel quality problem. The GM 3.6L SIDI engine runs great on 87 octane fuel with 11:5 to 1 compression. You can't pre-detonate if the fuel reaches the combustion just in time for combustion. If you want to see your 3.6L run a little stronger, run it on e85. The earlier 3.5L could run e85, but the much higher compression ratio of the 3.6L really brings it to life with e85 fuel.

im surprised the turbos are not more intelligent.

use a large wastegate and keep it open. keep turbo inlet bypassed and spooled. when load asks for it close the wastegate and bypass valve and poof boost. optics can monitor turbo rpms.
