I agree with most of the above, these cars are great and we all love them. The replaced engine threw me too. Mine is 18 years old and still puts a smile on me and my passengers. And has suprized many newer sports cars.

This is like reliving 2002, the 4th gens problem wasn't the performance. The major complaints were the idiosyncrasies that most owners looked over because we liked the cars. The hump in the passenger seat, the long dash, blind spots. The Mustang was the easier car to live with even though the performance was lack luster in comparison on the GT models, the 4 valve cars ran well. What's crazy is, history repeats it self. The 6th gen is an incredible performer but you're beginning to see the same complaints, visibility, ergonomics, etc. The new Mustang is the easier car to live with.

Blind spots on modern cars have gotten so bad that it's hard to image anyone complaining about this on a 4th gen. This was never an issue to me even when they were new, but these days a 4th gen offers the visibility of a convertible with the top down compared to just about everything else modern I've driven.

Price and styling keep me away for sure. I looked at a 50th Anniversary edition at a local Chevy dealer last weekend. Nice color, great performance. The rear has grown on me considerably. I still can't stand the front though.

ill also add 4th gens were the last real performance bargain v8 powered sports car.

for mid 20s you could an ls powered car with some decent options as long as you avoided a ws6 or ss PKG.

while it wasnt the most modern vehicle or best built it was far from the worst.

those days are long gone.

The GT Mustang is the only bargain anymore, and that's a stretch.

Can get a new Mustang GT right now for under $30k, I'd say that's a pretty awesome bargain.

it appears if you look closely you have to qualify for those discounts to get that price.

otherwise, its going to be very tough to negotiate those cars under 30k. not saying it cant be done but to get thousands off a car like that will take some hard work.

Lots of great points posted.

Here's my two cents: We have 4 vehicles - 2011 Yukon Denali, 2001 Trans Am WS6, 2000 Mustang GT, 1980 Trans Am SE. I recently had to replace the clutch in the '01. It's a McLeod RST and they offer a rebuild service. So, the Trans Am was sidelined for about a one month between holidays, repair time, shipping and re-installing. During that time, I drove the Mustang as my daily (wife drives the Yukon). Now, the Mustang has relatively low miles (71,000) and we've put Bassani headers, X-pipe and cat-back on it. Plus a C&L intake plenum, 70mm throttle body and cold air kit. It's not exactly slow -13.20 at Houston Raceway Park, but not close to the Trans Am (stroked LS6, TEA heads, cam, headers).

During the time driving the Mustang, I remember how I hate the seats, hate reaching for 1st gear, and find the console useless to rest your elbow.

Got the Trans Am all put back together this week. What a difference! That car just fits me like a glove. Seats are comfortable, steering wheel in the perfect spot, shifter is right where my hand is (WS6 short stick, stock hurst underneath), perfect position for elbow. Then, of course, the performance!! It's funny when you drive a car for a while, you get used to it. For a short period, it felt like the Mustang was pretty quick. Haha.....nope! Even though I'm still in my break-in period for the clutch, holy-****! I love this car! Gave it a bath after my test drive and it's "King of the World!! Woo-Hoo!!!"

Needless to say, I love my 4th Gen!!

As a side note, I recently test-drove a 2016 Camaro SS with manual trans. Sitting the drivers seat, it's very comfortable, shifter/console very ergonomic in comparison to the Trans Am and the performance and exhaust note (performance exhaust option) was very good. However, back seat!! I tried sitting in the back and my head was hitting the roof! At least with the Trans Am, adults could actually FIT! This was a deal breaker for me, as I sometimes drive people at work during lunch.

Australian engineers worked in cahoots with GM USA to build a so called "performance" 4000 lb bricks (5th gen/Chev SS/VEcommodore). Actually GM(Holden) and Ford australia have now both ceased making local cars.. due to such poor sales.

Some flashy new tail lights and 500lbs more weight, don't make a $40k+ car desirable. Their added horsepower only makes up for the added weight. IMHO, 15 years on... all they've created is land barges that are technically worse than their predecessors.

The GM 4th gen are a true performance muscle car, double wishbone front, solid axle with torque arm, light(ish) weight, that can also put some crazy acceleration to the ground on some wide street rubber rather than just smoke the tires and go slow.
