Default Official: Pontiac Grand Prix GXP

From Autoweek
Pontiac Grand Prix GXP While engineers work out details on a production G6 GXP, Pontiac marketers will be busy with the other GXP on the stand at SEMA, the production 2005 Grand Prix GXP.

Just six months from the showroom, the Grand Prix GXP is the first V8-powered Grand Prix since 1987. Adding economy to the performance package, the 290-hp, 325-lb-ft 5.3-liter comes with Displacement on Demand. DOD “drops out” four cylinders when V8 power isn’t needed, saving up to 12 percent in the fuel economy equation.

Grand Prix GXP also gets the full complement of suspension upgrades, lowered ride height, and serious cross-drilled disc brakes with lightweight calipers plucked from the Corvette.

Want another sign this Pontiac performance thing has real traction—and not only in the sales marketing sense? Once
engineers decided 18x8-inch rubber was required for the front-drive wheels, they made an un-GM-like decision: They fit the rears with narrower 18x7-inch tires for what they believe to be a better-balanced handling package.

“We were leading the market in front-wheel-drive performance,” says program engineering manager Phillip Minch. “But
we wanted to own the market.”

Now that’s something we’re going to have to drive for ourselves.
