Face it, if there is any chance of getting a 4-door, V8 powered, RWD, manual transmission car, with GTO-levels of interior quality and exterior fit and finish for under 30,000... we should all be dancing in the streets. This is what we've all be waiting for (and what GM really needs).

failed? not many performance oritented vehicles are hot sellers. Not an excuse, I think the biggest problem with the GTO, that its called a GTO.

Pontiac front ends are boring nowadays (agreed), I like this chop

I agree, the aussy cars have much better looking front ends

Chicago Show Shapes Up

Saturn, Pontiac, Toyota lining up debuts.
by Marty Padgett (2007-01-30)

Next week's Chicago auto show will see the first public showings of the new Saturn Astra, Pontiac G8, and 2008 Toyota Highlander.

The show, held at the city's amply sized McCormick place, opens to the media on Feb. 7, with the public given its chance to see the latest production and concept vehicles that weekend.

Among the major introductions scheduled for the show are the Saturn Astra, the European-bred compact sold in Europe by GM, and now being brought to the U.S.; the Pontiac G8, an Australian-made sedan with V-8 power and rear-drive; the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, completely redesigned for the 2008 model year; and a facelifted Nissan Titan pickup truck.

Scion will show off its new generation of vehicles - a successor to the xB is planned, as well as a new model dubbed the xD. Ford is expected to show updated versions of the Mercury Montego and Ford Freestyle, both of which are manufactured in the Chicago area. And Dodge is expected to have an updated Dakota pickup truck for Chicago's stands, too.

Forget the Holdens, bring the HSVs stateside along with a set of 411 badges for us yanks who measure output in SAE hp instead of kW.

Pontiac isn't letting its Australian connection go that easy with the demise of the GTO. Instead, it's bringing back a 4-door relative based on the Holden Commodore SS, but rather than use the GTO badge, it calls this sedan the G8. The base model is equipped with a 261-bhp 3.6-liter V-6, which also boasts 250 lb ft of torque, which it delivers to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic with sequential shift mode. The big dog G8 GT is powered by a 362 bhp 6.0-liter V-8, which produces 391 lb ft of torque. GT buyers will be able to select from either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, although the manual option will be added after the car is launched.

Riding on 114.8-in. wheelbase, the G8 has a fully independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Curb weight on the V-6 models is 3885 lb., while the V-8 GT tips the scales at 3995 lb. Unlike the GTO, which was a four-passenger vehicle, the GT has seating for five thanks to the three-passenger rear seat. The G8 has Pontiac's trademark split grille and rides on standard 18-in. wheels. The GT offers optional 19-in. alloys. A sport package that includes a rear wing is available across the board. The G8 is slated to go on sale in August as a 2008 model.
