Dammmm... And BMW see's it fit not to equip its cars with a dipstick. Can't wait to see this result on one of those new twin turbo 3' I6 or the new tt V8. If the guy has been following the recomended oil change intervals and BMW has provided the service (they have a tool that reset the oil life monitor)-BMW will replace this engine.

The lube shop I worked at in high school also has this tool, so it must not need to be BMW that services the car.

While what the BMW guy did was silly, changing oil with less than 3000 miles on it is a huge waste of money, oil, and does more long term damage to the engine than letting it go 5000 miles. It is now standard fare to let the oil and filter go to 5000 miles before a change. If the car is heavily tracked, then that's a different story.

looks like someone dropped about 50 hershey's choclate bars in the oil fill lmao. what i dont understand, is this guy did this and deserved to have to buy a new motor and didnt, but most people who maintain there cars, wind up having stuff go wrong out of the blue. Just doesnt seem fair.

Yeah, i'm with you there, man. I've seen some really bad stuff happen to some really good people that maintain their vehicles meticulously.

i agree its a waste of money and oil....but how does fresh oil damage an engine? when i change my oil i go by the milage as a reference only...i go more by color and smell...although i never let it go much higher than 3500-4k

if i recall there was a backstory as to why the oil was left in the car that long. I never found the thread which had the reason though.

also some cars can have an unmetered air leak from the dip stick and that would cause them to fail emissions tests. which is why some companies have done away with it.

EH, i try to keep it every 5k, but it usually goes more, but i do use mobil one oil and a k and n filter every time.

Last change i went about 6k with a few track passes, many many beatings/ burnouts and about 3 sets of tires. I was suprised as it looked pretty much the same as when i changed it after 5k with slightly less hard driving.

Mobil 1 on their site posts the following:

If Mobil 1 Extended Performance is recommended for 15,000-mile intervals, what’s the maximum limit to which it can be pushed? In other words, if a driver goes an extra 1,000 miles or so, is he going to damage his engine?

Mobil 1 Extended Performance is recommended for up to 15,000-mile or one-year oil change intervals. However, if your vehicle manufacturer recommends an oil change interval beyond 15,000 miles and Mobil 1 meets the performance level specified, you can be assured that Mobil 1 will go the distance.

Wasnt worth it to get a new one in my eyes, i had no problem waiting 2 years and getting a low mileage one that still had over a year left of warranty for %50 of the price of a new one

I always change my oil either every 3000 miles or every 3 months. I dont care if the oil or filter can last longer.

i dont think he meant the actual new oil causes the long term damage, im guessing he meant the slightly more 'dry start' from the filter not being primed or full of oil. i fill the **** up out of my filters before i install though so this doesnt necessarily apply to all...... of course he might've been meaning something else lol.
