Okay, so I need to clear this up in my head: Gen 1 rear came stock in 2004-05 LS6 models, Gen 2 rear in 2006-07 LS2 models, and Gen 3 rear in 2009+ LSA models? If so, how do you go about getting a gen 3 rear in a V1? If not, please clarify for me.

no gen 3 is "2008" and still bolts up to our cars.. The 2009+ have an entirely different setup.

When in 2008 did they come out? I bought my car in November of 2008 and my car shows much of the evidence of being driven like it was meant to be driven by the previous owner. Some of the key clues to that are a blown diff bushing, CAGS delete, and a cat-back that was already on the car. The diff wasn't replaced under warranty(but the transmission was along with a bunch of other stuff), but that doesn't mean that the previous owner didn't pay out of pocket for one to be replaced. I drive the hell out of my car and I haven't had any problems with mine even after some horrifying wheelhop. What are the visual differences among the generations? I swear I learn more about these cars every day.

I used to say the same thing...

By the looks of your mods, your making ~330 whp.
You most likely wont break unless you go to the track.

I have videos on youtube racing evos and e46 m3s from a dig when I was stock.

The after I got my cam and new clutch, i lined up with STi from a dig. and...POP

Thanks. I wish they designed the V2 rear in such a way as to be able to bolt into a V1. Oh well. How strong in the Gen 3 so far?

^ As far as I know nobody has blown a gen 3 rear and very few gen 2 rears have broke.

Some people have better luck than others and like someone else said, it can usually take stock power unless you are at the track. Records show that my diff was replaced in November of 2005 at 11k miles..lol. I bought mine at 40k, it now has 56k less than a year later with several track passes and beating on it on the street, but I never let it wheel hop and as soon as it does I get out of it.

I need to call the dealership where most of the warranty work was performed and see if they have any record of the diff being replaced. I bought my car with 45k on it and I'm sitting just over 70k now. There is minimal whine at low speeds and the pinion seal leaks a tiny bit. Other than that I've had no problems with it.

From what I've been told, as long as you aren't leaking on the ground, you should be fine.

Yeah it's not a bad leak. just a little bit of seepage around the seal.

Good to hear. I'm not an easy guy on parts, and I'd prefer not to replace the same part more than once
