Default Noise from AC

Well, I've been trying to figure out what a noise was on the car. It is related to the AC, becuase when I turn it on and off, the noise goes away. It is above 40 mpg, it makes a sound like you are drilling a hole into metal with a drill. Seems like the consistency and volume of the noise is related to the vehicle speed rather than the speed of the engine.

The AC is still cold, so I don't know what it would be. I have the GM extended warranty, and am going to call the factory tomorrow. I just wanted to see what you all might think just in case the factory won't cover it.

Thanks,
Chris

Wouldn't make sense for it to be the AC AND vehicle speed related. Does it do it in nuetral?

No, the sound won't happen till 40+. I may/may not be related to speed. All I know is when I hit the off button for AC, the sound goes away. Just wondering what AC component that might be.

Yeah the compressor is really the only thing that could/would make noise. Unless it's loose in its mounting, I just don't see how it would be speed related vs. rpm related. But I've been wrong before .

I'm stumped to. If it's driven by the serpentine belt, the sound would change when I shift. Maybe it's just hard to distinguish volume and speed with road and wind noise.
