Default Ticket to 425 rwhp?

So I just bought my first V and I have a B&B cat back and k&n. I would like to know what type of mods can get my V close to this number?

I plan on replacing the valve springs due to seeing some of them break on v's with higher mileage like mine. Going to do obx Lt's and some more bolt on's with a tune.

Thanks Dave..

LS6 or LS2? Does the Fast intake offer any advantages over the stock LS6 intake. I know the LS2 intake is not as good. What about fuel mileage at this power level? How radical does the cam have to be?

i make 400 with my cam, kooks and CAI, if i bolt on a FAST and 90TB ill be at 420 no problem. The ls6 is perfectly fine on a stock motor but with a cam youll see a good gain especially in the higher RPMS where the LS6 will drop off with a cam.

I cant even tell i have a cam except at idle so id say anything from 228 duration up and a FAST youll easily make 420-430.

Gus, i actually gained 2mpg highway with the cam and long tubes and stayed about the same city so i get about 16/24.

A mid sized cam on a stock car with long tubes will net you 30-50rwhp. Add the fast and youll see another 20.

What he said.

I made 410 with Kooks, K&N, Magnaflow, cam, and tune. If I had a FAST intake I have no doubt i'd be around 425.

If you do cam and heads with supporting mods you'll be closer to 450.

So the ls6 will put out almost 500 flywheel hp with those mods? Seems to easy! My last cars were a few cobra's and it was not so easy without a power adder.

Cobras also started with much smaller displacement motors.

I'm with you on this, but that's just my opinion.

Maggie will make that easy. And you don't have to worry about where your power band is.

I like my maggie! But I also love my headers, my cam, my pulleys, and my rockers! 500rwhp is more fun than 500bhp lol

What cam's does everyone like for daily driver v? Also I bought the yellow ls6 valve springs so I don't have to worry about my high mileage ones. Are they an easy normal install or is there anything I specific I need to do?

It depends on the particular motor/vehicle setup. The GM yellow springs will be a limiting factor to start with.

Cam selection has a lot to do with your thoughts on driveability, performance and reliability desired.

Big hp (with accompanying Pro-Mod idle) is possible out of a 5.7 N/A motor but, for me at least, it would not be very much fun in densely populated areas (read: city traffic).

A selection based on area under the curve would be a better choice, especially with a manual transmission. Picture a torque curve with the shape of an inverted v versus the shape of a horizontal parentheses (with the curve upwards). Guess which one makes more usable power.

Look at some of the work done by Patrick G. Quite impressive stuff. It only costs $25 for him to spec you out a cam and if you don't like what he recommends you can always go with an "Axe Murderer Magnum Terminator X9" type grind.

Is there a better valve spring combo to go with that is ok for the stock cam but would be good for a aftermarket cam in the future? I would like to put a medium cam in it one day but this is my daily driver (in the city) and it needs to be realiable also. The V has 140k so I am worried about the valve springs dropping a valve here soon. I am planning on doing obx Lt's with my b&b cat back, CAI, cam and then tune. Thanks for the help!

yellow springs are fine for a stock cam but any aftermarket cam you do your gonna want to upgrade to a more capable spring. Persoanlly with 140k on the clock, i wouldnt be opening up the motor to do a cam. id be putting that money to the side in case something goes. LSX motors are tough but the i wouldnt be putting parts on the car that if you need a rebuild or something are gonna change in the future.

just to ask since I am about to purchase a CTS-V...

Would the LS6 or LS2 respond better to said mods(intake/headers/exhuast/cam/tune)?

What kind of difference in WHP?

I am leaning heavily towards the LS2 06-07 for a lot of reasons.

LS2's seem to consistently dyno 10/20 ft/lbs higher in response to any mod.

The only thing I recall seeing/thinking was when maxing out the maggie - then both motors reach a plateau of theoretical air starvation and then it equals out.

I went with the '05 because the price was $3000 lower than any other V I could find at the time and the mileage was half of those that were overpriced. If I had it to do over again I'd go LS2 - but then I'd miss out on telling all the 06-07 owners they need suspension upgrades to improve their towing capacity.

yea its not as noticeable without boost. Boost is when youll see more gains from the ls2. Plus with the ls2 you can throw on L92 heads and ls3 intake.
