cats are for hippies, the best catalytic converter is the kind that tunes the rear o2 out so there is no catalytic converter.

True, but living in Texas with yearly car inspections...not worth changing cats out every year just to pass it.

What's the story with gutted cats? I don't mean to thread-jack but I was just curious. Any benefits??Pros/Cons? I've noticed in the past couple months=20,xxx miles, when I REAAALLY romp on the car...Especially redlight to redlight I have that lovely stopped up cat smell in the car. I was wondering if gutting the cats might help out....And I could stand it being a little louder too.

From what I have heard with our cars getting rid of the cats doesnt make any more HP than with them. Im sure loosing them may increase the exhaust note some, but probably not a whole lot through the stock exhaust. Also no cats will make the fuel smell worse.

Thanks....It's not really a fuel smell, it's that rotten egg smell you get from clogged cats....Only happens when I beat on her.

The truly awesome cars/builders are the ones who can make insane power retaining the emission devices. A good cat is hardly a restriction anymore (look at the post '75 (when they started putting them on) converters if you want to see restriction, lol.

Now, something like my 'velle, I would not put or want to put cats on it, but if something already comes that way is what I'm saying...The bad part is you can't run leaded fuel or some other additives, although you can get by w/o it too. A properly functioning, high flow cat should not ever stink unless something's wrong, fwiw...

I do think a car sounds better w/o them though, but I'm not into really loud (obnoxious) sounding exhaust anymore though, so don't mind them. The part I do not like is the $$$, needing more O2 sensors, thieves that try to take them and needing to get smogged every 2 years, when they need safety inspections here instead (if you see some of the wrecks on the road and those that don't having functioning brake lights, etc.).

in PA they just inspect based solely off of if there's a check engine light, the emissions machine trusts the reading of the o2 sensors, and if it's at a proper level, you pass.

my car revved noticeable quicker with the cats gone. some people say "blah backpressure etc", they don't understand that the car is working harder to expel exhaust gasses when you have cats, and that's why the car feels a little faster, because the engine is working harder.

About the only good thing about living in backwards *** ALABAMA is there are no emissions testing laws. I ran a Mustang with open headers to high school for about 2 years.....The neighbors LOVED me but the po pos never messed with me....About the exhaust anyway

Ive only lived in Texas for a year but from what I understand they do a visual inspection of all the exhaust as well as a sniffer test through the tailpipe. I moved here from chicago where every 4 years they just plugged into the OBDII and if no codes come up you pass. I could be mistaken, maybe someone who knows better could chime in for me?

Yeah, Merto ATL here. I actually got sniff tested (TIS) when I first bought the car and was registering it.

theres a set on Ebay right now...Sat 7/2 at 3 PM EST $650 with cats. I must have bought the last set with the "resonators." Woulda bought catted if I knew they made them (state inspection, not for another year, but...). I went headers-resonators-right to remaining stock. Car is still pretty quiet until it goes into boost.
