OK my friend has a trans am m6. He can't get it in reverse unless the car is off. Otherwise it won't go into reverse. Amy suggestion

Short in the reverse lockout wiring or circuitry.

Unplug the lock out solenoid on the trans for a temp fix.

I would've started by asking whether the reverse lockout was kicking in or whether the guy simply couldn't muscle the shifter into reverse with the car on. If the former, your answer should suffice. If the latter, the guy has a massive transmission misalignment, which is probably caused by his transmission mount being squashed flat.

With the lock out deactivated you really gatta muscle it to get it into reverse with car on or off. But you should still be able to put it into reverse with the car on. Ive been driving my fox without the lockout. They sell lighter springs/ball to put in place of the lockout so you never have to worry about it and its still hard enough that you wouldnt mistake it for 5th. I may go that route.

Im thinking its a misalignment issue as well. How is it getting into the forward gears? Any issues?

All the other gears shift fine. He barely bought the car a couple weeks ago and had no problems then. He's a pretty big guy I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem getting it into reverse unless something was wrong.

Just ask him whether he can get the shifter moved into position to get into reverse. If he can do that, then the shift gate works correctly.
