Default Proper rotor change technique

I learned that the 4 torx head bolts on the backside of the calipers aren't there to remove them, but only learned that after destroying about 3 of them. Dealership doesn't sell the bolts separately.

Instead, I had to take it to my mechanic & they were laughing at me because there are 2 18mm bolts mounting the caliper & voila. I swear I searched here for how to get it done, but no one mentioned how to remove the calipers.

(BTW, this was my buddy doing it because he said he could knock out brakes no problem. I was simply replacing my warrantied rotors/pads from Brakemotive)

I dont think your suppose to split the calipers at all, not good for them, just unmount the caliper and pop the new rotor on

I split my driver side front before I realized about the 2 18mm bolts.

Nothing was my impression when I read the OP.

The process of performing the task of replacing his Rotors is where the problem arose.

Not true, I had my BM rotors/pads initially installed by my mechanic about a year ago. They've warped twice on me. BM will say "disk thickness variation", but I saw the rotor being turned on the lathe.

I watched my buddy do the brakes on a couple of other vehicles before letting him tackle this, so I figured he could do it.

I don't know about the seal between the halves. There wasn't much there. I believe the previous owner had gnarled up the male torx bolts & we made them worse. Dealer wants a whole new caliper & doesn't sell the bolts separately . . . at $280 pop. O'Reilly wants $150 + $90 core/caliper.

This is after spending 15 mins taking a brake kleener soaked terry cloth to the caliper & *STILL* there's black/crusty crap everywhere.

Gnarled up torx head:

That's why I get a rag and clean them every time I wash the car! U don't really need to buy new ones all around, just get them blasted and powdercoated. Then u can have any color u want!

If I could get them for $80 a piece brand new I would just replace them. Be careful when you bleed them. If you don't get all the brake fluid residue off afterword the paint peels off the caliper. FYI.
