Default Harmonic Balancer Weights (Stock, ATI, Powerbond) + Pictures

While replacing my Harmonic Balancer I thought I would get some weight and pictures of different Stock sized dampers.

Stock: 8lb 7.4oz –
The lightest here, but after mine went out at ~35000 miles not sure I could ever spend money on one again.

ATI 917266: 10lb 14.2oz (note this is the "lighter version" with the aluminum shell) – This is the damper I ended up installing after getting a good deal on a blem unit.

PowerBond PB1117-SS: 10lb 6.8oz This is a well-made unit, it does have a rubber layer between the outer ring and hub (very similar to OEM) but it has an additional restraining ring to ensure that it does not come flying off. If not for the blem ATI I would have been happy to install this.

It will likely start with a slight wobble that will leave you doubting whether its all in your head. You will look at it turning and have doubts. The rubber layer between the two rings may start to spooge out. One day, maybe after a WOT pull, it will REALLY start to wobble and you will have no doubt.

The stock unit WILL fail eventually. Recommend you replace with quality aftermarket the next time you have the rad out for whatever reason.

Mine actually started to squeak even with no belts on.

A little wobble is normal, even the ATI one wobbles a little bit, but when they start to go they will have more wobble to them.

If you read the corvette forums any you realize how bad the LS2 damper is it sounds like GM never really got the design down right. Most cars i would recommend an OEM damper, but not here...

Random unrelated side note, the powerbond one is for sale in the classifieds...

Put on a new ATI after builder did not put blue loctite on the 9 bolts..After about 25 dyno pulls I heard some noise ..I looked down and saw the bolts bent 90*.. Luckily, my Callies crank is keyed, but had to fork out $425.00 for new balancer and bolts..It states on the pulley..Must use blue loctite, so that is a must..When the new one was put on I used blue and orange for crank bolt..It's going nowhere now....

You are going to need it. I'm sure most of us had one around. Use this as a good opportunity to buy a set of torx sockets, you will use them on enough little things to make it worthwhile.

And yes, use blue loctite on the bolts, it's in ATIs instructions and a great practice for bolts that rotate that you really do not want backing out...

9-5-2013 edit: I did not buy a t-40 Plus bit. I used a standard T-40 bit... can't say i even knew they made "plus" bits

^^maybe the plus size is required for removal only, after the loctite has setup. When torqued properly, a regular T40 works for installation without stripping either the bit or the bolts.
