$800 cam job? Maybe if you're doing it by yourself with free parts.
You can always expect upwards of 1-2k easy depending on setup. I don't see an issue with an engine 'refreshing'. I'm currently at 145k+ and I'll be doing a cam hopefully in the next year or so.
And I fully agree about checking compression,leakdown. I did mine before I started modding it and found it to be in great shape at around 130k miles. 190psi every cyl, no issues on leakdown test either.

as said above, as long as you do the timing set, ported oil pump, and ls7 lifters you shouldnt have any problems. seems like everyone i personally know that has done a cam swap and didnt change lifters this year has had a lifter failure.
