Aluminum flywheels allow the engine to rev even faster than the steel flywheel we used, buy they're not the hot set up if your car is dragstrip bound. I tried an aluminum flywheel in my '99 Z28, and I couldn't keep the car from bogging off the line. The car normally picks the front tires up and does 1.56 60ft times, but it would bog with the aluminum flywheel. I even tried coming out on the rev limiter!
The general concensus is the aluminum flywheel works great if your car is going to be road racing, or autocrossing, but stay with a steel one for the dragstrip. The set-up we used is still much lighter than the heavy factory assembly. Bob

The stock ZO6 clutch and flywheel assembly is factory balanced.

How big is this balance issue? If I'm going to get an LS7 clutch and an Exedy flywheel I can't imagine that either one is sold in an unbalanced state. Would I really need to pay to have a shop balance the assembly?

basically, shops would ask for a fee to balance but it shouldne be that much...

..ok, im a bit confused. Some ppl are usin spacers while others dont. So, wats up? which flywheels need a spacer and which ones dont? Also, how reliable is that spacer when dumping the clutch or throwing big power at it?

Also, im interested in a steel flywheel, anyone got any info on actually weight comaparison between the a factory unit and the aftermarket unit? I once read that the stell could weight as much as 30lbs, but i would like if anyone has actual weight numbers they save first hand..
