Default Popular Hot Rodding Engine Shootout

In the February 2011 issue of Popular HotRodding, there is a "Muscle Car Engine Shootout". In this article they have top engine builders competing for the highest average horsepower & torque between 2500 - 6500 RPM on pump gas. The test contains several LSX based engines. The most notable competitor was Racing Engine Design that fielded a 426 ci LS7 headed entry producing 643 horsepower at a mere 6200 RPM and a thunderous 600 ft lbs of torque at 4800 RPM.

Anyone else see this issue?

Check-out the torque of the Ford Boss 429 stroker motor. There are several Boss motors but the one on page 52 made 608 ft/lbs@2,500 rpm and still 521@6500. That's more than most diesel engines and 4,000rpm range over 500 lbs/ft. In a 3,000lb car with a 2,500 stall 2.73 gear, MY GOD look out.

thats IMPRESSIVE all right, but I would like to see theese Engine Masters motors actually thrown into a street car, and see how long they live under real world operating conditions.
I have respect for what theese guys can accomplish on the dyno FOR SURE, but EM competition is definitely producing some dyno queens

Very true. Look at the DNQ's on the web site. Just like we run no oil in the rear-ends, just coated gears while making record runs. Because of coatings and new cyrogenics ( I think spelled wrong) we also only run 2 qts of oil in the motor. We weld every seam on the body in Pure Stock to help the chassis. We slow/limit the timing on some cars to help the bias ply tires hook. Limit timing until 5,000rpm, short shift 1st, 2nd then go to 6,500-7,000 in 3rd, 4th. What ever works.
Did you know a 305 crank is 5lbs lighter than a 350?
4.3 v6 chev rods are 5.98" and the pistons are same bore as 350?
Lighter crank = rpm
Longer rod that has GM part# and piston. Most tech's seem to miss this.

Need more??
LOL

hahaha, I scoured the details for years, and totally missed the 4.3 rod and piston spec details haha, that would have helped back in the day with building low buck stuff, oh well the LS motors will run harder now-a-days anyway, and thats what I'm messin with now
