Default 2 Cams 1 Choice

Okay here's the story. Got a 5.3 stock long block with 45k on it and will be putting and edelbrock RPM intake and carb and backing it up with a TH 200-r4 with a 2600 stall converter and 3.73 gears.
I have an Edelbrock 2215 Cam (220° Intake/224° Exhaust/.510'' Intake/.510'') Exhaust on order or should I go with a Comp Cams Thumpr (219/233Duration, 553/537 lift). If you had your choice ,which one, Plain and simple. The car is just a driver that's built for handling and just plain fun. Would like good sound , driveabilty and a broad power band. Opinions on these 2

i would use the 220/224 .510/.510. since it would allow me to use even ls6 valve springs, which are cheep, since the car is just a fun driver. the cam would make for excellent acceleration and throttle response.
but if it was me i would also mill the heads and use a thinner l33 5.3h.o/5.7 head gasket for improved quench and higher scr and improved power and tq.

I had decided on the Edelbrock 2215, but have been tempted by the Thumpr, but I'm not buying on sound alone. Let's face it average power output for a better overall driving experience, Not just peak output. AAAaaaaagg!!!

I would use whichever had the lower LSA or the comp grind.

It's 111deg. for the Edelbrock
109deg for the Thumpr.
How does this affect the performance?

It is your duty to run em' both and tell us what you think.

The thing that gets me about the thumper cams is the huge exhaust duration compared to the intake. In Comp grinds for LS motors, that seems to be pretty unique to the Thumpr series.

Closer LSA means more overlap (time both valves are open) which with a good exhaust system will draw more air/fuel through the carb. Its called scavenging. I would use the thumper simply because these LS motors seem to like quite a bit of lift. I have the stock springs off of my L92 heads which should work for you since the stock cam in an L92 is .551" lift. Lemme know

Yes it seems Backward to what I'm used too in regards to the I/E Duration. But LS motors are a different kind of beast and so are the Thumpr Cams. I'll be running Dougs long tube Headers w-1-3/4" primaries through 2-1/2 flomaster 50 series so it will be able to breathe.
The LS6 Springs are rated to .570 wouldn't those work too since the LS6 cam has .550 Lift

I would imagine so. Hell they're probably the same springs that came off my L92s

I'm leaning toward to Edelbrock, because the power band comes in at about 500RPM Sooner than the thumpr's. Though I have a 2600 stall converter both should work fine.
My advice to someone else with this question would be to go conservative, which means going with the Edelbrock, but the Neanderthal in me says, go Thumpr.

Ya know, this is a constant struggle for me too on my project. So far, I have been saying: okay, what was my vision when I started this project? I let that guide me. Otherwise, it becomes upgrade after upgrade.

Exactly! I'm Looking for something that's got good power and sounds nice. That's reliable and get a little stupid with from time to time. I want to do a track day at California and Willow springs eventually. Do an autocross course, but never really compete seriously. I like to do some early morning blasts through some mountain roads too, cause I have the suspension set up nice. When I hear the Thumpr I go "Damn that sounds Awesome" ,but do I want to live with it? The Edelbrock sounds good too, but this isn't all about sound. I Might be able to get the Thumpr with new pushrods for about 350 and the Edelbrock by itself for about 275 through my work which I think will be more livable.

I'm going to stick with the Edelbrock for now I think it'll work better with the 5.3 and my intended purpose. Should have the engine in By late spring or early Summer.
