lean out the idle mixture to the 14:1 range at least and yes 20+ degrees at idle will clean up the timing mixture quite a bit.

It is a few things, for one, I am going to be a cop by next year, so a car on the raggedy edge of streetability with a manual is no longer needed since I no longer partake in street racing, also I want to see how the motor will do in my 86 trans am with a built th400 at the track, there is also the curiosity and challenge to see how much economy a 5.3 can get with a carb in a car like mine, just allot of variables.

You keep mentioning the smell. Are you sure you don't have a small leak in your fuel system? Even a tiny leak can smell really bad.

Got the Vic Jr back on today with the 2 inch spacer, sure does cruise better, low end response is up again as well, i am looking forward to a 5.3 actually, just trying to figure out what cam i can use to make a bit more power and a touch of lope so it sounds great.

It idles at 14 to 1 and timing is close to 20 degrees. I am sure i dont have a leak. When i put the efi on i was under the truck and inspected everything and i had no leaks. I open hood atleast once a week to check. When i swaped the efi on the smell died down alot but is still there. I think some of my mpg may be my timing cause i am using the #2 pill and have not played with the settings except i set the rev limeter to 5000 to try to keep rest of drivetrain in working order. I will double check on the timing sunday.

Any time you have a cam with a tight LSA, you will have unburnt fuel at idle, just part of the territory. A stock cam should not be an issue.

Not funny, it is an addiction, not easy to stop like i would think.
Hey, Zones. Back when I was just out of high school (MANY years ago), We had a local night marshall who drove a '58 Chev with a triple carb 348. He would set at one end of our "strip" and monitor the highway patrol to see if any calls came in about street racing. Once in a while he would even race one of the locals. Can we count on you? Ron

Ron, back in the day, they would give you a ticket and worse case scenario the judge might give you a talkin' to. These days in Florida, they treat a street racer like public enemy number one! Automatic jail time, huge fines and they confiscate your car! Thank goodness there are still some drag strips around here.

Yeah, I was very lucky (still am) to live in a rural area with small towns, and at one time we had 3 dragstrips within about 80 miles. Worst trouble we had was not very many roads that were straight enough to street race on, LOL. One little town had a straight road through it, so we would line up right in the center of town and race either direction. There was only one phone in town, so we would watch that house and if the lights came on, we would scatter. I feel sorry for young people today. Most towns don't even allow cruising.

Ron
