cost of rebuilding it is more than buying a running 5.3L imo. good cam would be the ls6 cam with those small gears.

True that, get a used 5.3 for 400$ and have the extra cubes, or build the 4.8 to a 5.7, then you would be even further ahead, a stock LS1 rotating assembly would be cheap.

I would say determine if it has 40k or 140k. If it has 140k, I agree with the others, it is not worth a rebuild. If it has 40k, it should not need a rebuild. These motor are good for 150 to 200k miles.

If you are running a stock converter and gears, I would definitely not go any bigger than an LS6 cam and valve springs. Now with a set of 4.11s and a 3600 converter, you could go with a 220 duration cam. Small, short stroke motors really need a tight lobe center to bolster the torque, so something on 108 would be great. But, this is only with a set of 4.11s and a 3600 or more converter. If you are going mild, just stick with the LS6 cam like suggested.

I have a great street cam available if you are still looking. It is the one in this article, referred to as the "Torque Monster"...

It is new (never run).
