altenator help
I have a 6.0 with carb and msd 6012 new alt new plug 470 ohm resistor on the l wire i have 6-7 volts out on my ignition but still no output voltage i had napa and autozone check it and it was puting out 14.4 V at both shops any ideas would be great thanks

It is a four pin plug on the alt with three pins?
I know one pin needs 12v key on, another gets that resistor and 12v and the third I just left hanging.
You've got the post on the back connected to the + battery, right?

It is a 4 pin connector with 2 wires middle 2 pins i was told and looking on this site that the 12v goes to pin L or second pin on the alt wich has to have the risitir inline also. I am stumped. (yes i have the 12v to bat off the back)

I PMd you. I hope you get it to work. I remember searching for HOURS on this site keyword: alternator. There was some conflicting info and I sort of had to assimilate all of it.
In a car with an ECM the computer handles it. But carburetor people have to do a little extra work. As best I understand it, the alternator needs to see low voltage to kick in, the resistor sort of tricks the alternator into thinking that the voltage is way down. That is the redneck version, I'm sure some electrical engineer has a more accurate way of explaining it.
