I know one pin needs 12v key on, another gets that resistor and 12v and the third I just left hanging.
You've got the post on the back connected to the + battery, right?
In a car with an ECM the computer handles it. But carburetor people have to do a little extra work. As best I understand it, the alternator needs to see low voltage to kick in, the resistor sort of tricks the alternator into thinking that the voltage is way down. That is the redneck version, I'm sure some electrical engineer has a more accurate way of explaining it.
