Helping a freind with a swap and he's ordering parts soon.

I told him to get the laptop programmable MSD box, so we can adjust timing curves exactly, but is this harness a necessity? Will it all work without it or what's the catch here?

That harness is not required unless you need something of different length than what comes with the box standard. Order the box and see if the included harness is the length you need. If not, order the other harness.

But, you will need a serial to usb cable to hook up the box to a lap-top.

i think the harnes "extension" is actually shorter than the one that comes with the box. its supposed to let you mount box on intake i belive.

I believe you are correct on this. For the serial to usb adapter, do yourself a favor and get the one MSD recommends on their website. It might keep you from wasting money.
