Default Alternator wire voltage?

Alright carb guys, got a question about alternator wiring. Any idea of the exciter wire voltage Is supposed to be? My LS1 is a 98 and it has the one wire exciter wire plug. I was told that it does not use 12v and the alternator needs to be cut over for a one wire hook up, or a resistor added to the exciter wire to lower the voltage...but to what??? Thanks

the resistor is listed, do a search for it. Just ran it inline to the power feed wire. No idea what it was in the past that I bought for $1.19 at radio shack

Yeah, i will keep searching for it. It will have a resistance value and watt rating, like 100 ohm 1/4 watt, etc... If I knew the voltage I needed, I can figure which resistor using Ohms Law.

The better solution is to hook it up to the charge light. The bulb in the idiot light has the correct resistance.

Also not all alternators need that resistor, but best to always include it just in case.

My Corvette alternator is marked by the plug with SF&L. I have "S" going to the charge wire post (12v) and the "L" going to my dash light.

So does this charge light ha e a resistance of 470 ohm like the other posts are using? This is in a 70 Chevelle and I have no charge light, but could add one easy I guess

Your car came equipped with one from the factory. Did you remove it?

i had to put a 470 ohm resistor to pin b and 12 volts to pin c to make my alt charge

My sugestion is to have a local alt shop convert it to a signal wire with a self exciting regulator. Cost me $50

A working charge light can be a pretty useful thing to have. Helped keep me from overheating when my car threw a belt.

Single wire alternators are definitely easier to install. Something to be said for that. but IMO multi wire ones aren't that much more difficult and they do a better job of regulating voltage than the single wire ones.

Plus if your alternator every quits out on the road you will have to modify the replacement unit.
