With 317 heads based on what other people are doing in this forum youll be somewhere between 420-440 at the wheel depending on the air where you live. I think Ive read every build thread in this forum since the beginning. ~400 is what people normally get with stock lq4 pistons and milled heads.

rwhp depends alot on your trany , rearend set-up. not knowing that, its really hard to say. just out of curiosity , doug, how is your current seu-up built ? i ask because im running a 406 in my 68 camaro that runs just about identical to yours. i , too , have played with the idea of a LS swap. i think my LS3 in the 72 camaro is making close to the same power as the 406 in my 68, but MUCH milder . my 406 is a 2 bolt main block bored .030 w hypo flat tops. 5.7 rods and gun drilled cast crank. im running cast iron protopline 220 cc heads that i ported myself. the cam is a comp extreme energy flat solid (252/260- 576/592) w 1.6 comp rockers. compression is 11.4 and the intake is a super vic port matched to the heads. the carb is an 830 holley with annular boosters. hooker 1 3/4 super comp headers dump into quiet turbo muffs with an x pipe. are we close ?

So close it's not funny. You have a little more compression, and slightly bigger heads...Sounds like you found the same "plans" I did

its crazy how responsive it is. it acts like a 302. with more stall im sure its a 10 sec set-up . 60 fts are 1.7s. it pulls the wheels sometimes , but doesnt blow out of the hole. 4500 rpms on the stall would be huge !

Are you blueprinting and balancing the whole assembly when you change pistons?

What rods are in your engine? I'd maybe look at a good aftermarket set to go with the pistons depending ont he RPM you are

If you are going to go L92 do it now and ensure the cam is spec'd for it. With l92 heads and 230's/240's I expect your motor will turn some RPM!

I'd under-drive all accessories depending on how much RPM your turning to get a few extra HP and decrease problems. One of the guys I know had a 355 SBC in an 81 camaro that ran 9's but he was turning well over 8600 at the top as shift we at about 8600 of the 1/4 Was even starting to loose oil pressure. He always had issues with his alternator belt slipping at high RPM.

6500 - 7000 tops
550+ FWHP I hope
I'd like to do the L92/LS3 heads now... but may have to wait ?

Yes BP & B.....standard procedure IMO

This will be on budget and for under $4500 in the car running. I hope

No idea on the stock LQ4 head flow rate.

I think they are in the 260 CFM area on the intake. I think the L92s are in the 310 CFM area on the intake.

Most guys say that the L92 heads have a weak exhaust port ratio, so they are using a split duration of about 8 to 12 degrees.

i have a 7200 rpm pill in the msd and i dont hit it on shifts. when i had the 7000 pill, i would bump it on shifts. i gave up on watching the tach a long time ago. going through the traps, SOUNDS about 6500. just a guess.
