Default Anyone running a cam only LQ9?

Just wondering, I have another project in the works but thought I'd put a cam in my LQ9 and go ahead and put it in my mustang to get the car running.

It's a fox body with a TH350, 4.10 gears. What do you guys think and what would you think would be a good cam without having to flycut.

Thanks

I'm in the same boat, looking for a cam for my LQ9 but do not want to get into Piston/valve issues.

GMPP has the "hot cam"

I noticed that Edelbrock has two LS cams specifically for carbureted motors. One wild and one mild. The LSAs are 110 and 111 so I guess not that wild....

I was reading your thread and it got me excited. I want to put this motor in my Mustang for now, but when the other goes in I may put this one in my Buick. It would be a lot cheaper than doing another Buick motor. Of course I can't complain. The V6 had 150K miles and over 350 passes at 25 psi of boost before it finally gave up and ran 7.40's 1/8

My Fox body weighed 2700 or so 2900 or so with me. If yours is any where near there you should be running 7.40s again soon - with the stock cam!

I ran 7.85 with a lot heavier car and a stock LQ9

Stock LQ9 pistons are flat top.

I doubt I will ever go forced induction or nitrous so that is why I didn't go with an LQ4.

ZONES please don't tell us your are stock - with cam and milled heads and who knows what else!?!?! It's like saying "My new girlfriend is just average.....but she's won 12 beauty pageants!"

Yep, unknown mileage lq4, had rust in one cylinder bore, went BDC and hot it with a hone, only reason I milled the heads was the fact they were off and I was having springs installed, otherwise, a automatic with a nasty converter and t brake would yield better times, sure a larger carb than my 750 would help as well.

Although a weenie cam, it makes great street power and alot of our customers are happy with it in there 6.0L Trucks and Carbed swap muscle cars...No extra work needed other than springs.

We run a howards #190245-12 222/225 @50 .561/.578 on a stock LQ4. Dyno'd with a 750cfm carb made 460HP @ 5900RPM / 475TQ @ 4700RPM. Makes a nice street engine with some extra get n go.

Those are pretty good numbers. Not much more cam than my stock LS2 motor yet 20 more HP at a lower RPM and considerably more torque.

Is that with L92 heads or cathedral ports?

Would it be tough to get a wide lsa cam like the stock LS6/LS2 cam to run good in a carb LQ9?

You get much better low end and idle characteristics from the lighter lsa cams and the wider lsa will make power come in later and usually makes PTV issues a little better.

Bone stock reman LQ4 with the #317 heads. I realize with a tighter LSA and wider split can make more power, but this fits the bill for what this particular customer base wants. When they want more power, we build an engine accordingly for it...this partiuclar one its a stock reman LQ4 and a cam swap...

I am running a stock long block lq9 with a texas speed 235/240 .647/.609 on a 111lsa. No ptv clearance issues. Last year it ran a best of 7.35@96 with a 1.61 60ft time. Raceweight last year was around 3450. Hope to pick up a few tenths this weekend since some weight has been taken out.

You save at least 100 lbs with the manual though, right?

Idk, my t56 is 125 lbs, then the clutch and flywheel are another added figure I'm not sure of.

"this particular customer base" might be smarter than the rest of us, less broken engine parts, fewer trans and rear end repairs

My stock LQ4 has been reliable for 3 years and counting so far at 7200 RPM. Just weighed in today on fuel economy, 16.7 MPG, beating the hell out of it, sitting in traffic and i have to still lean it out since i switched back to the Vic Jr, it is hitting 12.0 AFR at cruise, was 14.7015.2, so still doing well for being lazy.

I'm planning on ordering this cam.
