Fun with Cam Timing........

In the spring I retarded my cam timing from 109 ICL to 110 ICL on my 226/234 110 LSA camshaft. I had hoped it would make more top end and more MPH. The car did not like it. It lost about 1 full tenth and 1 MPH.

So, over the weekend I advanced the cam to 107.5 ICL. I am looking forward to hitting the track to measure the results. I wanted to go to test and tune tonight, but I caught a bug today and feel lousy. So maybe this weekend.

It really is. We spend a lot of time fretting over camshaft selection, but I wonder how many fine tune it once it is in? It can easily make a 10+ HP difference. It is just a pain in the butt to do.

What made you pick 107.5 ? Just easier to adjust to or ???

Back when I was looking at roller cam for my 406ci SBC I had a guy really insistent on a 106 LSA (104 ICL ?) but after a lot of discussion I found out it would be real peaky.

My logic was that if I lost full tenth ET with just retarding it 1 degree, it obviously needed to go the other way. 1 seemed like not enough and I was not sure I wanted to go 2 LOL. So I put it in the middle.

Have you ever tried a timing retard? Back about 20 years ago I tried it in my Mustang and it picked up a little. I had it on a switch and would hit it in high gear. I cant remember how much it picked up but it wasn't much. It might give you a little MPH .
