Default thinking about getting a cam

Im trying my hardest to get my car on the road for the lowest price possible but the more i think about it i think i want a cam. Little history on me over the last couple years i went from a 79 camaro with a 468 chevy to a 84 grand national with a built 87 drive train to now a 71 cutlass with a ls2 swap ( in the works) i loved the camaro and big block but couldnt help but trade it for a grand national, grand nationals were fast in the 80's but compared to todays cars they suck so i started modifying mines not gonna get into what all i did but it would run with and beat new corvettes. anyway when you start to modify grand nationals its hard to keep them on the road so i got tired of fixing mines and sold it with the hopes of getting a 70's car and a ls motor which i have done, with that being said the thing i missed most when i went from the camaro to the gn was my big cam and lould exhaust, i loved the driveabilty of the gn but i missed the thump of a big cam. with that being said i now think i want a cam in my ls2 but im not sure what to go with, i cruise my cars a lot and never go to the track only do stop light racing and (french road on the weekend for you detroit locals) so wit that being said whats a good cam for a ls2 ? can i get a mix of the big cam lobe and good street manners or is it one or the other ? i plan on porting the stock 243 heads and adding new springs but thats it. open to all suggestions and input also if you know a link to different cams and sound links please let me know.

Everyone has their opinion on what is streetable. Is this going to be carbed? Also, a stall converter or manual trans will make a larger cam way more enjoyable. It is give and take with a cam. Too large and its no fun on the street. Too small and you loose out on top end. These engines make great power on small cams. Can you offer up some more info on the build?

It's going to be carbed probably a holley 750, as of right now I have a 350 for it but would like to get a 200-4r or 700r4 and will run with a stall in the 3000 range. More than anything I just don't want a real smooth idle, it's a muscle car so I want it to have that thump. Also planning on going with some 40 series flowmasters and whatever budget freindly headers that fit good on a body's. also about what am I going to spend to have the heads ported and cam installed ? I think that's going to be my determining factor between doing it now or waiting about another year or so.

Off the shelf edelbrock cams would be a decent choice for you. Or if you want all out, have one specd for you. Something in the 23x/24x around .600 lift on a 109 would give you great power on those stock 243s. A cam and reqd parts will run you 650-800. Install is a breeze on these things so if you are a wrencher, read up a bit and do it yourself to save money. Porting widely varies in pricing. Id throw them on stock and let her sing

Also, carbed engines like lower lsa's. Shoot for 109-111 with duration in the 230s-240s and it will lope nicely

Should I even bother porting the heads, how much more will I gain by porting them? Guy at my job said he had livernoise motors quote him at about 6-800 bucks not sure if I can afford to drop a grand on the heads especially if its only a small gain in power

Unless you are building an all out drag car/bracket racer, I would save the money and not port them. You will see decent gains, but on the street where it will spend most of its time in the lower rpm range, its not worth the money in my opinion

Sounds like a friends Malibu we built. He used a torqer V2 with a carbed 6.0, I say use that. Was a th350, 3500 converter with heads I barely cleaned up.

Ran 11.58 with him backing timing off from where we had it. You would probably love it. It was on a 112 LSA. Which is not perfect but you could not tell it was a EFI grind. I think that for off shelf you would be beyond pleased.
