Default picking a cam for a 5.3 foxbody

hey guys i got a 89 foxbody mustang i am about to start on got a 05 5.3 that i am dropping in it. i am trying to figure out a good cam for it. this car is going to be a street strip car that is only drove everynow and then to town and to work every so often but i do want it to be somewhat streetable and still make good power. the drivetrain is a 700r4 with a 2300 stall and 4.10 gears. the motor is going to be carbed using the edelbrock dual plane intake and ignition kit with, headman long tubes i think they are 1 7/8 primary tubes. i am wanting something that is going to make some good midrange power and not loose to much low end, i just want a great all around street cam. with a car that light i am sure it can handle a lose on the low end being a stock 5.0 is way lower power and still moves them fairly decent. any help would be appreciated. thanks

More converter is a must for a "strip" application. Otherwise, a small cam will work for the street. The edelbrock 2215 may be a great grind for you.

3200 stall, dual plane, something in the mid to low 220 duration on a 108 with a high 500 lift, 1 3/4 lt headers, and a Holley 650 with vac secondaries. That's a decent street build right there if ya ask me.

what stall do most people run with 224R and cams similar to that. i guess my thinking is off bc the 3200 just seems overkill for a overdrive trans when it goes to overdrive. correct me if i am wrong just seems pretty large especially for a car that is fairly light, thats why i picked a smaller stall

A higher stall in a lighter car will feel like a small stall around town unless its a REALLY loose stall. I've got a 3400-3600 stall in my 2800 lb pickup and it has no problem low speed driving around town or on the highway. Plus wouldn't your 700 have a lockup that will basically bypass the stall speed for highway cruising? I would hate to under stall a vehicle, you'd leave more on the table than over stalling it. Either way, get a good big cooler and you'll be fine. I'm thinking I'm gunna restall mine closer to 4k or so but I will see how bad my gears change it.

A lighter car cannot make a converter foot brake as high as a heavier car. So a larger converter drives better in a lighter car as well.

Footbrake or flash? I'd think foot breaking a car to the stall limit is more determined by the engine output rather than weight of the car? I could be wrong on my thinking tho please explain the difference between foot breaking or flashing for guys like me who might be confused lol. i agree totally on the weight of the car helping out a higher stall be more dd friendly tho.

Power and weight matter, but weight more than power as long as there is enough to push through the brakes.

My engine suggestion still stands lol. I think it would be a fun build. I've got a complete 5.3 layin around, maybe ill build it for a home built tube frame car. Idk tho about a project that big lol.

thanks for the info. i went with a precision 3000 stall so we will see what happens when i get the trans back from the shop. worst case is i dont like it and change to something else but i have a feeling it should do good enough for what i want. and i think i am changing cams and going for the 228R cam on a 112 lsa still undecided though
