Default torque converter to flexplate issue?

Found a good size stall to match my cam but did some reading and am a bit conufsed. Will be using a turbo 400 and found a 3800 stall that the guy was using with a sbc. I have a 99/00 lq4 with the shorter style crank. I read somewhere that the flexplate if stock might not work because its bolt holes are spaced wider than the torque converters bolt holes would be. I know they make specially built torque converters to bolt up to a ls style flexplate though. Any help on this guys. The price is right for the converter but im not 100% this is going to work correctly.

Stock flex plate is fine, but you should have the longer crank. If so, no spacer needed. If you have the 6.0 flex plate the holes may line up perfect. The spacer or the longer crank will support the converter snout.

I had a TH400 in my 05 GTO and that's how it worked.

this ^^^^

It's an either or deal....
Either you use a converter for a SBC along with the spacer,
OR you have the converter built with the longer pilot for a LS engine.
The flywheel position is unchanged, and the starter is not affected. </I>

This is info I just found on another forum. and yes zones since i have the longer crankshaft i guess i would not need the spacer that all the others are using with the 01 and newer lq4's. Any issue with the bolt pattern from the sbc style torque converter lining up with the lq4 flex plate bolt holes? Also whats the deal with the flexplates being flat or curved? i think the one on my engine is flat but I noticed it is cracked so will be replacing

You need a flat flex plate. It will line up the same for the starter as a curved or flat flex plate with spacer on the short crank shaft.

Mine lacked just a little from lining up,(its a 700r4) I just elongated the holes slightly in the flywheel and it was fine. Read of people doin it all the time.

a buddy of mine did that with his lq4/700r4 3rd gen camaro. I know a lot of others do it just always been a lil weary about it once you get up to the 450-550 hp range.I should be getting this converter tomorrow so ill try bolting it to my cracked torque converter and see if i have to elongate my holes too. I wouldnt mind buying a stronger sfi flexplate but the prices on some of those are ridiculous.

Just out of curiosity could you use a sbc flexplate? would it bolt up to the 99/00 lq4?

I have the hughs flywheel and spacer. Its a very nice setup for the th350-400, and far cheaper than a new converter.
