Engine diesels after shut off..help!
The other day was the first time I drove it when it was warm out..it did it a little when it was cold, but a lot worst now it's warming up..any idea what it could be?..some people say to much timing for the octane I'm running???..I run 91 pump gas, with 20 degrees at idle..I'm not sure what to do,but it's pretty embarrassing lol

There's still alot of confusion still as to what exactly causes these Ls engines diesel at shutoff it seems. Mine does it as well but I've got a few things I'm going to try. Check your plugs after it does it. I'm thinking if you've got wet plugs after shut off your either gettin way too much fuel at idle and fouling or pretty much soaking the plugs and the hot spots keep it runnin, or your runnin too low of timing to keep the plugs dry? I'm going to try and lean it out as much as I can at idle and run as much timing as I can as well as figure out this map sensor tuning too. I've already drilled and tapped my ifr in my carb and I'm going to dial everything in as much as I have patience for with this carb. It's still too cold for me to even attempt to fire up my truck, plus it's still under 4-5' of snow haha. I'd say check your afr at idle and slowly add timing until something changes or you just go way extreme and never see a change. I'm at 12 at idle if I remember right, but ill have no problem going all the way to say 26/30 if it helps my diesel/restart issues. Just make sure to keep an eye on your plugs and afr and it wouldn't be a bad thing to check temps as well (maybe I'm being over cautious with the temp checking but better safe right?) Also make sure your carb idle screws are set to that .020" transfer slot is shown and your floats aren't too high that it dumps excess fuel after you turn off te engine (happened to me due to plastic on the needle and seat from assembly). Details details details, or so they tell me. Report back please so I have a idea what's helpin or not. Also the car looks killer matte black, I'm going to spray mine black with gold flake rustoleum style haha
Edit; I forgot to add to check the plugs to see if they are wet rather than me just assuming they were.

Also make sure your alternator isn't back feeding your ignition some how, say the key switches both your ignition and alternator on and somehow it back feeds thru. Pretty much make sure your ignition is separate from anything that could possibly keep it goin for a little bit. Even a radiator fan spooling down can cause a charge too.

Thanks for the ideas guys!..pretty sure it's not a back feed problem..I have the ignition by its self,as well as my alternator power wire..kinda thinking it has something to do with the carb

Some guys have no issues and some (like me) have it happen every time I shut it down. Most of us are runnin around the same timing so that leads me to believe its a carb issue. But, I also read where a member ran extreme timing at idle to help clear it up. So I'm not going to rule timing out just yet. I myself am starting with the carb tuning first tho.

I run 20* at idle. My 6.0 has been the only one to diesel shutting off. That was on 87 octane. On 89 it did fine. I ran a TR5 plug for a while, and that is a pretty hot plug. Went to TR6 later and then BR7EF for the nitrous but never happened to try 87 after I switched to 89.
What colors are offered in plastidip? I would like a medium gray. It sprays on and keeps its finish or does it dull out over time like primer?

Thanks for the help guys,I pulled the timing down a little at idle seemed to help for now..I was running 20*,now dropped it down to 17*...zones check out dipyourcar.com!..you can get any color you want, also can go matte, satin or gloss..matte is cheapest..it's suppose to be real durable to all elements..I bought the pro car kit,it comes with everything you need..when you want to go with a different color just peel it off!..I think I'll Rock the black for now, then I'm going gunmetal gray..

That doesn't look bad at all man. I have always had a place in my heart for the matt black. lol. looks mean.
As for the dieseling. Mine does it at random... I have played with timing and carb, just quit worrying about it. haha

zones:i bought the pro car kit,it came with 3 gallons..after 5 coats, which is what they recommend i had about a 1/4 of a gallon left..so i would buy 3 gallons..if you get the procar kit its cheaper by the gallon..they say you can spray on any surface, primer is just a little harder to get off...i just wiped my whole car down with acetone, stuck to it just fine...Steve:thanks alot man,as far as the dieseling goes i put 19* at idle..help alittle bit,but if i hit the gas before shut off it doesn't do it..so i'm leading towards carb adjustment needs to be done!..

dang 19 deg at idle. How open are your throttle blade? I think if I ran 19 deg I would have to open the blades so much the boosters would come on. I run 28 at idle. much below that and rpm's drop too much. Every motor is different though.

Builtz71, that is too cool! I checked out that website, and I think I'm going to give it a go on my Malibu. I've wanted to do the matte look really bad, now just have to decide on color...

The LS dieseling is directly related to a carburetor. Thats my conclusion to my experiment. I had a carbed 6.0 and it always dieseled. I played with timing, idle circuits, pump cams, accelerator pump/nozzles, air bleeds and jets. You name it, I tried it.
I recently converted this engine back to fuel injection with the stock truck intake. I am even using the MSD 6010 still from my carb setup. Same timing curve and all. I am using MegaSquirt for the fuel. Guess what? It hasnt dieseled yet. Shuts off nice and clean. The only thing different is the fuel delivery and the intake. Damn carb was a mystery I guess.
