So, you sold all your old stuff and have this new motor. What is the new motor? Do you still have the comp cam listed in your first post or is that gone too?

No, this is my new motor. I sold all my sbc stuff finally. The list on page one is a parts list I came up with to order for this junkyard ls. I want to make sure it's going to be good.

Well then, if you haven't bought a cam, I think Martin @ Tick has cam designed to be as big as possible without the need to flycut with the square port heads. Something around 230 on the intake with a 110 LSA and a 107-108 ICL oughta make that bad boy fly. That and a 4,000 RPM converter and you have a combo that could go 10s if well tuned.

X2 on calling Tick! I haven't used his cams yet, but I plan on having one before 2014. Also if you have not purchased the heads yet. I would recommend looking into a set of ported ls3 heads from chevy performance. They are not much more than a set of stock heads.

Ok I will do that when the time comes, I just cant get super crazy as I have to keep this car totally pump gas friendly. Coan told me the converter I have is between 4-4500k. Are the LS3 heads better than the L92's? I'm pumped to get this motor on the stand and see how it looks. Low 11's or high 10's would be amazing, car would need a cage. You guys are going to be sick of me before this car is done.

This is true! I did a bit of playing around today, was bored so I took off stuff I won't be using again. Hoping to have it on the stand tomorrow night, going to pull the heads and the pan and see how bad it looks on the inside.

The ported heads will be the same compression. They run about $400 more. Trust me the portwork is worth the money! I dont think 10s will be that difficult, and streetable at the same time! I am hoping to do a similar build this winter, and am excited to see how this turns out!

I like the sound of tens! I'll pop the extra money to do it. I want to do this correctly, it could take me three years to have it done but it will be worth it. I have a feeling yours will be done well before this one is. I just walked in the door from work so no progress on it tonight, sucks.

Thanks. I realize they aren't optimal for racing but I street drive the hell out of this car and 3.73's or 4.10's just won't get it done around here. Another night of no progress, ran 5 miles instead. I promise, I will tear into this thing and get myself into gear as soon as I can. I can't wait to order some parts.

Here is where it's at now. There was metal in the pan....yanked the heads and oil pan and found no signs of where it's coming from. Popped off some bearings and a main and they looked perfect. Going to them off tomorrow as well as yank the cam and see whats up. Motor is going to be taken apart down to just a bare block, cleaned and painted...pending what we find.

LOL....even the stock stuff is worth a few $$ to someone

I got my motor due to no oil pressure and the guy just wanted the core $$$ back ($300) since he had the motor replaced.
On tear down I found the #3 cam bearing toast. All the other bearings looked factory fresh (no idea on mileage, forgot to ask and it was getting rebuilt anyway)

Just be sure to check or replace.

This one was said to have a heavy knock in the low end, hence why it was $100. I went to pull those damn 10 mm bolts that hold the mains on, guess what? Totally rotted, I got maybe half of them off, the others are toast, gonna be a bear to get them out, not sure how to tackle it yet. Got to love salty New England roads, block looks like it came out of the ocean. Still no idea what caused this described massive knock, everything looks fine thus far. I'm going to replace every bearing in the motor as I go to eliminate any issues, I want this thing to be reliable as well as quick.


Yeah I know that stuff has some value, I'll try to get whatever I can out of it.

Well found out I know somebody who has sockets made for stripped and rotted bolts and a puller so I can get to the cam to pull it, I actually traded him a canoe for his time and help removing said parts some night this week. The 1st gen Camaro has been swapped 2 million times over and I'll bet i'm the first to finagle such a deal to make mine happen.

Block is totally stripped, the reason for the shavings was the cam wearing, cam bearings are trashed. We are cleaning up the cylinders a bit here than it's off to the machine shop to be magnafluxed, new cam bearings pressed in, polish the crank and cleaned up. Pistons and rods look awesome and even the rings spin free and look awesome.

Block is going to the machine shop this week, pumped! My friends dad owns a restoration shop and told me we can work on this motor over his place from now on so no more dirty garage. Tons of room, tools and heat! In between skiing, snowmobiling and hockey this winter i'll be wrenching on this in total comfort.
