Block is at the machine shop, had to have my dad bring it down as I get up at 5am and am lucky to be home by 7pm. He told me the guy said the block looks "scaly" because of the external rust and "don't even bother to clean the pistons and rods, just throw them away". Looks like things are off to a great start.

Any history on the motor ?

You could find another block and upgrade your pistons if a bore is needed ?

I can't see the internals being "scaly" unless it was in water/left outside to the elements.

The internals of the block are fine, he means the externals being a New England block and all. Salt is killer. When I called him he really wanted me to go for forged internals and I think his comment was meant as that, but I've seen the power the stock bottom end motors can take. New pistons and rods as well as the balancing etc will set me back quite awhile.

There are affordable forged pistons u can get and hang them on the stock rods with some good rod bolts. Shouldn't set you back too bad. Try probe for the pistons

Summit Racing offers a "ready to go" block, but $750ish may be a bit high...but IF you figured in machine shop costs, it could be a wash ?

I'm calling him tomorrow, still haven't heard a word from him. I'm half tempted just to go get the stuff and scrap what I have and buy an ATK shortblock andadd forged pistons and ARP rod bolts. Does anybody offer a reasonably priced forged shortblock?

May be the best choice ?

I had mine re-done locally and bought all the parts taking them to the machine shop....minus a few small items....was still into it for approx. $25-2800

I'm thinking that may be the ticket as well, can't really beat that for the price and at least I know everything is forged minus the crank. As funds allow down the road boost will be added so I really would like to do it once and do it right.

I was at the builders shop for two hours on Friday and made a decision on what parts to use so he could give me a quote. Stock crank polished, block maganfluxed and cleaned as well as new bearings installed, callies compstar rods, custom diamond pistons. We shall see what the price come out to be..............

Haha ok. Block was magged today as well as the crank, both were perfect. Having my dad drop the main caps off tomorrow to get this thing rolling.

Pulled the trigger, parts I listed a few posts above are going in, he had a gm muscle car pan there he say he would throw in so that's going on too (yes, I know it hangs low). Gave a healthy deposit so hoping it's done somewhat quickly. As soon as I get it back i'll be calling tick to figure out my cam, springs ,lifters, roller rockers etc. The streetbike you can see in some of the pics is on craigslist to fund this phase of the build.

Than it's carb, intake, set back plates, msd box, headers, mating the trans to the motor, figuring out breathers, elec fuel pump, tons of button up, uhhhhhh. Hoping it runs before next winter....hoping!

Getting it back tomorrow, ended up using diamond pistons, polished stock crank and eagle rods, I guess callies and K1 didn't make the size that was required.

Here is a picture, compare it to how bad it once looked

Sold my bike so ordering parts like crazy now, decided on the brute speed blower cam as I intend to boost it in the future. Which lifters do you guys recommend?

How much did your machine shop charge to throw the shortblock together? (Minus the cost of pistons) Im still watching your build and gathering parts. We have almost the same build exactly and same et goals. Good luck again
