Default msd 6010 box problems

I am running a 2000 lq4 6.0 the motor is bone stock never been opened up except for a cam swap!! here is the problem it is back firing out the carb and the exhaust. sometimes I can get it to start and run grate other times it will just keep turning over backfireing and what not. when I have my laptop hooked up it is saying cam sensor fault.i have tried 3 new cam sensors I have made sure all my grounds are good and added a few more. the box is seeing the right amount of power when cranking! the 3wires that go to the cam sensor r good and are doing what they should. I have pulled the cam cover to make sure that the cam is in right and it is, so im lost now let me know if you can think of any other things that I can check thanks

Where is the box grounded? What cam? Did you measure PTV? Is it reading rpm when cranking? Fuel is right?

A cam sensor failure will cause the problem you are seeing: starts right half the time and back fires the other half of the time. You need to figure out why you aren't getting a cam signal.

Did you do anything to the harness, like swap out cam sensor plugs? The cam sensors for the 24 and 58 tooth reluctors are wired differently. The output posts are labeled A-B & C and each map to a different color wire. Check a wiring diagram.

MSD actually has respectable customer service. If it is wired right give them a a call.

PTV is good its a small cam. the box is grounded to the bat. fuel is right. I will check the cranking rpm tonight when I get home but last time I looked at it it was showing cranking rpm!

See if there is something inthe connector for the cam sensor. If its throwing a repeated cam sensor fault, and you have tried 3, there may be a issue in the connector or wiring.

well I am 90% sure I found the problem the msd ground wire has a wiring clip that connects it to the harness. I unplugged it and made sure it was getting a good contact and now it seems to be fine! not showing cam sensor fault anymore and is running grate I started it up and shut it down 50 times and never gave a problem! thanks for the help guys

For anyone else with a similar problem, a cam installed 1 tooth out on the timing gear will cause same problem. The MSD needs to see the cam signal within a certain amount of crank degrees of where it's supposed to be or it will throw a cam sensor fail code.
Another guy told me of same symptoms with loose cam bolts.
