Cam selection ok its been a long time since I've posted anything on here but lets give it a go with my long winded post. I have a LQ4 stock bottom end, 799 heads the are going to be port and polished, I'm going to get the holley high ram mostly for looks and msd ignition box and some headers. I have some edlebrock 1406/1405 carbs and 700r4 with a gm 12 bolt with 3.73 I'm going to be driving the truck 80-90 miles a day. So I'm looking for cam that sounds mean and builds most of its power at top end, but is very drivable, I've been looking at comp cam thumper cam but I'm still new to the LS world.
A lot of people have "heard" that. I have yet to see a good dyno test of a Thumper in an LS engines to support the bashing. Since the OP is using Edelbrock carburetors, he does not appear to be going after max performance anyway. So, a Thumper might be the perfect choice to give him the old school sound he is after and great mid range torque.

I love suggestions and I like the look of the t-rex cam but will I have some valve to piston clearance problems with my stock lq4 bottom end and 799 heads and your right speedtigger I'm not going for max power just good top end pull, mean sounding and daily drivable

I have only seen two threads where somebody actually had a Thumper cam and both were over 400 to the wheels.

oh I know intake is way over the top. But the reason I'm running the lq4 with a high ram and a cam is because I've always wanted a engine the comes threw the hood and sounds bad *** but I can still drive back and forth to work

Interesting you are wanting to daily drive it, yet want a pig of a cam that is all top end? Backwards idea IMO, and looking at those thumper cam lobes they have the least amount of duration @ .200" out of any of the comp LS lobes - so leaving potential power on the table no doubt.

As for mileage, I would not expect a cam with that much overlap to be fuel efficient, but the OP's requirements are very reasonable. I think it is the carb setup that will require the most attention from him to achieve fuel economy.

yeah it not the total power house setup but I want something strong and reliable that got 14-15 mpg but sounds and looks like a mean raced out big block and one day I'll join the EFI world but I love my old carbs right now

oh track times aren't a big thing for me, my truck has never seen a track. I just love punching it on the freeway and stretching its legs, hence me wanting the top end to over come the fact that my truck is a 4000lbs brick lol
