Default LS1 Head mods. Advice Please.

Hi guys. Thanks for the ad (all the way from Australia)

I'm after some advice on which way to go with my LS1 heads. (Carbureted)

im in the middle of an LS1 swap into my '83 Holden VH Commodore (an iconic Aussie GM car since the late 1970's. Currently sold in the states as the Chevy SS)

It's going in for some work soon to have:

233/233 cam installed
Valve springs
Pushrods
And new rings.

It'll be running a QuickFuel 750 on a Victor Jnr single plane high rise manifold and 1-3/4" primary, 2" secondary, 2.5" outlet, Tri Y headers.

What I'm wanting to know is if I can squeeze much more power out of doing some head work?

My mechanic said swapping to stock LS3 heads is a good way to go (if I can find some). Failing that, I'm wanting to know is if it will be worth having the LS1 heads ported etc? Or is it a waste of cash?

Im basically trying to find out if modifying the stock heads will be worth the trouble, compared with buying a set of custom heads

I'd love to hear of any experiences.

Cheers

A good port and polish won't hurt (if done right) and can show some nice gains.

Aftermarket heads are a set above the P&P above, then you have Aftermarket with P&P.

With a 5.7" (LS1), and 233/233 cam....I think a good P&P would be fine.

Thanks for that, Doug. I'm still doing some research, as labour costs in Aus tend to be high and varied. I think having a good port and polish done will be worth while.

Thanks again

You can gain about 40 horsepower or so with a really good port job. If I were in Australia, I would contact Brenton Marusic of Marusic inductions. He does amazing work.

Thank you. That's exactly what I'm trying to find out. I'll look him up.
