new girlfriend with bad ideas...
ok yea as title said...heres the story, i recently got my 2000 camaro SS running(machined crank stock bottom end, LS7 cam, 243 heads, FAST 92mm intake, hooker headers, 160 degree t stat.92mm TB, volant air box) i drove it for 6o miles before old man winter pretty much kicked me in the nuts and unleashed snow storm after snow storm. during that time i met a nice girl and this woman is AMAZING! anyways she lives in medina ohio...i live in wickliffe, its about 45-50 miles away but its all highway. we were out on a date on sat and she was asking me about my SS. she is pretty big into cars and i brought up that i have a summit 3:73 gear set for the car that i havent installed yet. she was like why the hell not?! lol i really dont have a answer. my question is what would you guys do? bear in mind i am planning a trip down to greenville n.c. in june...should i install them or not?

My 2002 Z28 A-4 came with 2.73s from the factory; I loved the fuel economy, but hated the off-the-line performance (or lack thereof).
With my 2.73s, intake mods, and high-flow exhaust, I enjoyed 29 - 32 mpg on the freeway.
After I installed my 3.73 gears, my car was an absolute blast to drive around town, as it really came alive off the line. Unfortunately, my fuel economy plummeted to 20 - 24 mpg on the freeway.
And, despite having a very quiet MagnaFlow muffler with twin resonated tips, plus three layers of Dynamat inside the car, the higher RPMs at interstate speeds made my exhaust note absolutely obnoxious. After a week of 17-mile commutes each way with a droning exhaust, I can't say that I missed my Camaro on the weekends.
I've since converted down to 3.42 gears, but they're much of an improvement in any direction to me: I still average 20 - 20 mpg on the freeway, the car is very loud inside, but at least it's still fun off of the line.
I'm 38 years old; I don't have the same appreciation for a loud car that I once had when I was 30 and installed my 3.73 gears.
If your tastes sound similar to mine, you may find that 3.73 (or even 3.42) gears can be a love/hate relationship, especially if you do a lot of freeway traveling at a consistent speed on long trips.
You may consider explaining to your girlfriend that she's important enough to you that you're doing to forego the 3.73 gears so that you'll be able to save money on fuel so that you can spend more on her. Plus, you may also wish to tell her that you'd like to enjoy her company and the sound of her voice, without an exhaust still ringing in your ears, when you get to her house.
Whatever your decision, best of luck to you!

OP, there's no reason to go to 3.73's if you have an M6 car with factory gears. A4 - pick your poison as in the post above.

so bad news, me and carrie are kinda turning things down. shes got some depression issues and doesnt wanna talk about them. dont know how i feel, but im sure ill figure it out. as for the car. i kinda wanna do a dana 44 swap. just seems like the benifits far outweigh the drawbacks
