Can we revive this thread?
Im looking into putting a 5.3 in a 2002 Fbody as well. Will a gen3 5.3 be a direct swap for a 5.7? I have everything I need to get the car running, short of a longblock, intake, and fuel system. If I can throw in a 5.3 for half the cost of a 5.7, Ill take the HP hit just so my car will run again.

Great! Obviously you'd want to keep the 799s/243s that come on the 5.3.
So what are my options for upgrading the cam? Are there off-the-shelf cams for this setup?

I did a 4.8 swap on a 02' Z28 that I got with a blown up longblock so I've been there already. Don't forget that if you go with an iron truck block your going to have to drill and tap a hole on the front driver side of the block for the alternator bracket.
don't worry, it's really easy to do but it's definitely something you'll want to do before you drop the engine in the car. Otherwise everything bolts up the same.
