Default SOM 2002 Z28 Camaro - build thread

Starting a new thread to document the build as the build is taking a different direction.

In April of 2019 I bought a cam only Camaro to go drag racing in.
Mods included: Lid, LTs, ORY, BTR stage 3 cam, Yank SS3200, milled 241 heads, ported throttle body, UDP, NT555, SLP SFC's.

2019
I started with a oil change as it hadn't been changed since 2014.
Ordered a Optima Red top and installed 0ga. grounding wire
High speed polishing and some high quality wax

2020
Next came some performance parts order - Founders adjustable rear lower controls, pan hard bar, and pan hard rod. Also got Mickey Thompson ET drag radials.
Next A/C - 4 oz. of PAG 150 - recharged the system to 1.495 lbs.
Next replaced the Inner and outter Tierods with Moog units and did a home alignment using strings and a ruler.
Rebuilt the 10-bolt - Replaced the pinion bearings/seal and axle bearings/seals which made the rear pretty quiet. Set lash to .025 after over tightening it.

2021
Coolant flush
Ordered Afco shocks front and rear but only installed in the rear
uninstalled the rear sway bar due to shocks

Ordered B&M transmission cooler - not installed
Mickey Thompson SS drag radials again - not installed
parts to rebuild the 10 bolt again - not installed
ordered crank seal - not installed
ya might be seeing a pattern, it wasn’t a very productive year.

Built a 2004 husqvarna garden tractor this year. It was abandoned with only 100hrs on it. Old guy bought it brand new and said it never ran right. I rebuilt the carb, replaced the tires and did all new fluids. It’s ******* mint now. Did a bunch of other stuff too but let’s move on.

2022
Ordered UMI chromoly rotofab LCA's and relocation brackets.
Installed the LCA's but the brackets were manufactured wrong and didn't fit.

Ended up building a 2001 Polaris Scrambler 500 ATV this year. Took up most of the summer. It was a fun build though, fired the parts cannon and everything is new.

2023
new OE Chrome z06 wheels
new sticky mickeys rear
new nitto nt05r fronts
new EBC slotted and dimpled rotors
new yellow stuff pads
Crank Seal
and fresh ceramic coating for maximum shine.

Will Keep updating, more planned for this year.

Thumbs up

Nice looking SS, I'm a sucker for an SOM F-Body! Once you get them springs and drop that Camaro on them tires, that'll tie er all together nicely!

Paint came out nice but there are a few spots that need more polish time. Can’t wait for the new springs to show up.

Turned out to be a fantastic day, rainy though. Got the chance to do the the brake fluid flush. Ran into some issues with the flusher, rubber hose was so old it collapsed during use and was barely sucking out fluid. So replaced it with some silicone hose I had left over from my ATV build. Ran 3 bottles of Motul 600 through it. Brake pedal feels firm.

Fluid is nice and clean now.

Next I installed the UMI chromoly strut tower brace. Sticker was low and didn’t look right from the factory so I redid it.

Ordered UMI chromoly torque arm and new AFE dry air filter. Fram unit was nasty.

More to come.

Parts cannon was no exaggeration. What exhaust are you thinking about and what about your current one don't you care for?

The electric cutout on the exhaust is rusted through the outter layer, and whoever installed the hooker aero chamber looks like they welded it with their feet. Not impressed. Sounds okay though; but a nice borla catback with a new high quality electric cutout would look so much better. It’ll have to wait though, still need to finish the suspension and get a real alignment done at the shop. I have access to a brand new unit that my friend and I can use so it’s going to be dead on by the time we’re done.

Next job is to fix the rear axle so it’s quiet and redo the crank seal to stop the super slow leak.

I have a long wait for some of these parts.
Rear EBC brake pads won’t ship until 10/26/2023.
Torque arm and air filter wont ship until 7/24/2023.

In the meantime I started working on my avalanche to get it ready for ATV season.
I Installed 2 front calipers today and flushed 1 gallon of DOT 3 brake fluid through it.
Rotors and pads have less then 4k miles on ‘em.
New parts ready to go:
Moog upper control arms
Moog lower control arms
Moog inner and outter tie rods
I’ll finish the install this weekend.

Now I need a new exhaust system for it because the flowmaster rotted through. I’m considering a Borla sport catback kit.

All done with the Avalanche after that. Back to the fbody.

Edit: ordered 8 k&n mini air filters for the vent system.

UMI torque arm has been shipped, ETA Friday. Looks like I’ll have something to install after all.

Rear sway bar ready to go in.

I’ll call OReillys tomorrow to order a Wix air filter for now until the AFE filter shows up next month.

I want to get this thing on the road next weekend for the alignment. This is my first fbody I’ve done with such an extensive suspension setup. Can’t wait to experience it.
