Yeah, if I had a n/a 4V Cobra, the first things I'd do is gears and a blower.

91/92 Z's ran 14.0's factory! Small bolt-on's we went 13.7's at 100 mph like chip filters and airfoil oh flowmaster too.

Just a little FYI

Also had a 95' FireHawk M6 that went 13.2's at 107 with power programmer, K&N, airfoil, and First set of 17" BFG's to roll off the line!!!!! Should of kept that car 16k miles and mint!

They could be quick, but as note to that mere 100 trap, they just didn't cut it up top. Sucks too because I love 3rd gens, but it'd take some time and money to make it run well. My buddy didn't have an easy road to hit 12's in his 89 IROC. It was more expensive than difficult though.

i had a 91 z28 and as far as i can remember i had every bolt on out there. the best i could do in the 1/8th mile was 9.0. don't remember the mph. i loved the engine as far as reliability but i agree, the up top power was lacking. hell my truck pulls harder up top than that did. i built a stout motor for it but the car was falling apart so i sold it for what i had in the motor.

dont forget thought that the TPI was awsome for its time. its kind of usless comparing it to a LS1 but for the year it did pretty good against 5.0s. although the fox-body was way to light for most 3rd gens to keep up, atleast the TPI was right there with the power, stock to stock.

That is a great point. If I recall, didnt the TPI have MORE power than the ol' 5.0 but the weight was the real reason?

true dat. also because of that, the mustang became so popular that aftermarket companys supported them a whole lot more than the 3rd gen. the good thing is that the LS1 changed every thing sure there is still more support for fords now a days but everyone knows that modulars are weak compared to LS1s. in mader of fact there is this guy i know that is so happy because he spent $4000 on this bad *** 4.6 long block with cams and stuff and he just broke 300 rwhp .then there is this other guy with an 03 supercharged cobra that spend all this money on kenny bell stuff and just broke 400rwhp .

A couple main reasons for the Mustang taking over during the late 80's/late 90's were due to:

Price. A comparable thirdgen is usually more than a fox.

Availability. The Mustang has a lot more for less.

Transmission. If you wanted a 350, you were suck with an auto.

Simiplicity. The computer controls in the GMs were much more sophisticated than of the Fords. The Mustang can keep running pretty much fine with head/cam swaps. The third gen only handles bolt ons without problems. Once you start tearing into the engine, it's time for some lessons in PROM burning. This is probably the biggest thing that keeps the third gens from being more popular.

whats with the ford vs chevy stuff?? i have owned 3 mustangs in the past, i still like them. if i could find a 1993 cobra R for a reasonable price, i would sell my LS1 in a heartbeat. LS1s have yet to dominate like the 5.0 did, and the 4.6 dohc are making quick work of LS1s too. dont get me wrong, i like LS1s, but they will never be what the 5.0 is...

I've owned 3 Camaros and 1 Mustang. I prefer the Camaro just because it's what I prefer. The LS1 is better than any motor thrown in the Mustang besides the 03 and 04 (I'm refering to EFI here - I don't know much about Mustang history prior to 87). So that's 5 years of LS1 to 2 years of Blown 4.6. Don't forget the LT1 whupped the 302 and 2v 4.6, and it was side by side the 4v 4.6. So I would say the ONLY time the Mustang was on top was 87-92 and 03/04.

I also think a the 87-92 L98 would have been on top of the 5.0 durning the same years if it was offered with a 5 speed. Damn GM.

i agree, the LS1 is a better engine. its probably the best american engine ever produced. but my point was, that it will never reach the pinnacle of racing like the 302 did..or the chevy 350. my guess would be because GM never really embraced it like ford did the 302(ex. SVT, SVO, FRT.etc)

You been lurking at ls2.com/ls2 area of this forum? The intake manifold seems to be MIGHTY fine, and the engine seems to be pretty much a better LS1! But it of course still remains to be seen.

I'd rather it not reach the same pinnacle so that way I'm faster than the reds and their stock-headed 350's. You know the ones...

"yeah, it's got a 750 double pumper, punched out, off the shelf 3/4 cam. Stock heads for now, but I want to get a set of the Vortec's cause i'm too cheap to buy AFR's. Anyway, it's so FAST!"

A cold-air intake, exhaust, and pulley swap on those blowers will net you some serious rwhp...if "this other guy" is only getting 400 rwhp with all this kenne bell stuff it is his fault for not getting it tuned. I've seen high 400 to low 500 at the wheels for very little money.
