I picked up my '98 Z about a month ago with every intention of modding it. Right now I'm still in the planning phase, and the biggest thing I'm hung up on is if I should swap it over to a 6 speed or leave it A4. Eventually I plan approx. 550-600 hp for it, daily driven. If left auto, the normal stall, rebuild, etc would occur, and with a manual, it would be a matter of choosing the proper clutch. I plan to drag race often, and have a little fun on the street, and I have no intention of ever autocrossing. Again, this is ment as a daily driver, and it will be on the highway a lot over the next summer. Let me know what you guys think.

The only thing that really matters is what sort of trans type YOU like best. Daily driving, city, highway, racing, etc., they both have up and down sides. I don't think either is better or worse, it's just a matter of preferance. Go with whatever you prefer, because if you don't you'll regret it.
Having said that, personally I always pick the auto. My F-bodies aren't daily drivers but most of their street action is in busy, flat, urban areas. Traffic and lots of stop lights. Shifting just seems like a hassle to me. Some people love it though. Gotta do whatever makes you happy.

IMO, if your planning on building the hp, you're not worried about the hp loss through a A4 vs. M6. If you want to drag race, your best bet is the A4. No missed gears, PCM controlled shifts (you can program them), and consistant launches everytime (brake stall or flash).
Just my $.02 though.

For drag racing, I would say stick with the A4 unless you love to shift and are really good at it, have no problems changing clutches out from time to time, They're more consistent and quicker in a drag race all day long. For everything else, an M6 is more fun to drive IMO, makes more power through less parasitic power loss, and gets better milage.

A4 w/over 500hp will eventually have to be rebuilt/built up
M6 you will constatly be going through clutches
Of course my personal choice is always an auto high a stall![Grin](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_grin.gif)
what are you goals? N/A or do you plan to spray it?? What kind of times would you like to turn at the track with it?

If you are planning on a stock stall A4 with that kind of power you'll have to take into account that you cant run a big cam to get the power. Well you could go big cam with stock stall, your only problem would be the absolute turd you would be driving down low. It would be alot like a big turbo supra, nothing off the line and flying like a jet up top.
I'd say go m6 if your against a stall. There are clutches that can handle that power rather effectively with minimal upkeep. If you dont mind a stall then go A4, it will ultimately mod for mod be faster with a stalled a4.
Also seeing that your planning on mainly highway driving a large stall a4 would cause you no problems. After you lock the stall up it drives just like stock. Not to mention that racing a stall from a roll is brutal

Thanks for the replies everybody. I think I will end leaving it as an A4, I have a friend locally who builds race automatics, and he thinks we can build a pretty nice tranny. Of course, a 4L80 is not out of the question.
