So 3rd gen verts that were sold new on dealer lots were all conversions?

Like this one?

I always thought that from 1987 on, the verts were from GM?

This thread makes me miss my 87' IROC I had back in the day.

I had a 406sbc, M5 and 3.73s.

The 406 was dressed up like a 305, complete with the dual snorkel 5.0 HO breather.

It made a hell of a sleeper in the early 90's when all of the 5.0 Mustangs were running around on every corner..

Correct. ASC was commissioned to do the Verts for the Thirdgens. A "GM" vert will have a 3 in the VIN but still has ASC door stickers, etc. A "non-GM" will have a 2. All the 350 Verts will have a 2, as I understand it. It is kinda like how the WS6, Firehawk, and SS were outsourced for 4th gens, the TTA was outsourced also to PAS (along with the Typhoon and Syclone)

I didn't think a 350 vert was available from a dealer on the 3rd gens.

I'm positive they were all 305's...

You could get a 350 in a vert but it is very, very rare and one had to know to order the car as a 350 and have it converted in order to get it. As previously stated you would have to verify it through the vin. It would be designated as a coupe instead of a vert and also have an 8 instead of an F for engine code. More info on this can be found on Thirdgen.org.

I have no idea how the 50 or so 350 GTA/Formy convertibles that were made in 1989 were ordered. Depends on you definition of from a dealer I guess, but it is well documented that ASC converted some 350 Firebirds in 89, we have a semi complete list of VINs for that year from ASC.

If you mean from a dealer like GM put a 3 in the VIN to signify that was it a convertible, then yes it is true, but I believe they were all ordered through dealers as I think by 89 that was the only way to get the car converted. Earlier they would do customer cars but they went away from that.
