Drove one for years at Covington, La Police Dept. The iron headed versions of the LT1 are rated at 265 while the aluminum headed versions are rated from 275-320 hp over the years. The old Caprice was a dog off of the line for the 2.73 gears, but would top 130 mph with the light bar installed (you know... drag). The Fords of the same era would eat my lunch off of the line but on the big end, the old Chevy would make up the difference.
Just an experiment, catch an old man on the Interstate with a 1995 model Cadillac (LT1 equipped), get him to race you with your stock or slightly modded Camaro and when he drives out of your sight, write me back and let me know how your stomach felt.

the iron headed LT1s are rated at 260 and not 265hp. If the car was equipped w/ a mechanical fan then a typical loss of 10hp and 5 ftlbs occured. I do believe you could get the optional 3.08s in the 9c1s, but I don't remember. Hell my Roadmaster Came w/ 2.56s. Talk about a tire smoking gear, and to think I had a theoterical (sp) top speed of over 200mph w/ those gears.

I bought one of those 9C1 cars. It was a retired Montana state patrol car. Third gear was gone.
They are rated at 260 HP, 330 ftlbs.
It had the 3.08 posi rearend so it was a bit of a dog off the line but once it got moving it really went.
I pulled the engine and am dropping it and a 5-speed into a Datsun 240Z. Should be a fun ride when I'm done with it.
Someone earlier stated there was no difference between the iron head LT1s and the Aluminum headed models. Thats not true, the iron headed models had a different cam setup for low end torque.
I replaced that stock cam with an LT4 Hot Cam just to push the powerband up in the RPM range a bit. The car will have traction problems as it is, I don't want to think what the extra torque at low RPMS would have been like.

Even though those caprice cop cars were beat on, they were built to take it. In addition to iron heads being more reliable than aluminum, all hoses were the 1,000,000 mile silicone hoses and coolers for just about every damn fluid in the car (engine oil, power steering fluid, trans fluid ect...) so they can sit at idle for long periods of time. A friend of mine has one he bought from a local police auction with 234,000 miles on it, has 254,000 on it now, and it still pulls like a bastard. Really surprised me when i drove it.
