I totally agree about the maintenance. Pull the oil cap and look inside to see if there's much varnish and gunk built up inside. Also check to see that the PCV valve is good and the PCV system is working well. These motors have a lot of compression, and blow-by can pressurize the crankcase, blow out seals and accelerate wear by contaminating the oil. If the enigne is leaking from the front and rear oil seals, there's a good chance that the crankcase is getting pressurized.
I'd stay away from a motor showing these kinds of maintenance issues.
