look at the rpo codes inside the driver door. look for G80 then either to the left or right there will be another GXX code. if you got a M6 you got 3.42 if you got a an auto either 2.73 or 3.23. post the code and go fromt hee.

if that don't work you can do the old jack up the the rear axle, mark a line on the bottom side of the driveshaft, at 6 o'clock on one of the tires, spin the tire one full revolution and count the number of times the driveshaft goes around, this will get you close. Had to do it on an old car that didn't have the RPO's anymore

I've been told to do this but just haven't, been too lazy . It won't get you exact numbers but certainly close.

And no it's not a stupid question.

I belive that cars with 2.73's have a steel driveshaft vs the aluminum on shorter ratio axles.

Yeah, the aluminum driveshafts are lighter and therefore facilitate the engines reving more quickly. I'm not positive but I believe the steel driveshafts are less prone to bending or breaking though.

As to the 2.73 vs 3.23 "debate" my 2 cents would just be that you should consider what your future goals are. Adding a stall? You may be fine with your 2.73's. On my last Camaro I swapped for 3.73's from the 2.73's and boy was it worth it, a huge difference. Personally I would not swap 2.73's for 3.23's, I would put in at least 3.42's.

the car is stock now

I want the car to be faster but still DD, i was gona get some basic things first (cutout, lid, etc.) but do you think a gear swap would be a better place to start since everyone says the 3.23s and 3.73s make such a huge difference?

A gear swap will make a very notiecable difference. 3.42 or 3.73 are what you want with an A4. Around town you will lose a noticeable amount of mileage, but on the highway 3.73's are pretty good, you will still pull 22+mpg. I would not hesitate to upgrade your gearing. I had a bolt on 3rd gen and 3.73's were by far the best mod I made for acceleration/driveability. Go for it.

Cant speak from experience but there have been many threads along the lines of: "should i do gears or a TC?"

TC wins every time... just saying.

Im doing a TC, but then again i already have 3.23's... reserch it and chose whats best for what you want to do with the car.

Torque Convertor is great if you are mostly interested in drag racing and ***** out launches. If it is a daily driver 150+ miles a week you need to really sit back and think about what the cars purpose is.

I can almsot guarantee you'll be happier with gears and exhaust/lid than you will be with a TC, though the TC would be faster.

I have a 2.73 auto right now, after having a full bolt on 3rd gen with 3.73 and I went ahead and put a catback and CAI on the LS1 since it is very fast stock, but very lacking in any sort of "voice". My next major mod will be a TC, but that is because I have another car to drive daily and don't need to worry about the semi-madness of a 3500TC. I would never talk anyone out of a gear change though, you won't be dissapointed and if you go with a TC in the future a shorter gear will help your driveability.
