if im correct, the z28 302 motor with all the over the counter parts, such as 2 4bbls, and headers, chevy only rated it at 290hp, but in reality it was really making upwards of 390hp.

Correct. They under rated it at 290 hp to keep the insurance companies happy and premiums low.
The Z/28 was built for the Trans-Am circut. Had a 302.4 CI, just under the 305 limit. The Roger Penske Z/28 won 10 out of the 13 races the first year it was in the Trans-Am series. Won 8 straight races in a row.

yea i gotta 79 camaro z28 im in the process of restoring it, and i wanna go ls1 but i don't kno if i have enough money so i think im gunna go with a destroked small block chevy, how much would a ls1 longblock cost(block and heads)
