how many gallons or milage range is left when your check gauge light comes on?

I use a rule of thumb that there is 2-2.5 gallons left when that light comes on. But i have driven as much as 30 miles with that light on and still not had any problems getting to the gas station.
Don't know for sure how many gallons are actually left but that hasn't gotten me stuck on the side of the road.

I have read the same as posted 2-2.5 gallons are left. I myself never like to go that low.
