In May of 66 my 425 hp vette ran a 13.09 @ 114 on the stock tires. It was in 90+ degree heat at Lions. It had 3.36 gears and weighed 3250 no driver.

My other 427 425 hp vette ran a 12.21 in phoenix in 1999. In 66 dyno dan nichelson in longbeach dynoed a freshly un crated 427 425 engine. It made 585 at the crank with headers and jetting. In a corvette with 4.10 gears, the stickest tires available at the time (flared fenders) it ran 11.97 @ lions.

The best tires around would be similar to a stock gsc radial now.

ps, I still have both 425 hp vettes......and probably always will.

Point is I am not disputing the new cars are amazing but I still feel the Muscle car truely died in 1974.

as always JMHO,

Nick
I disagree, there are more cars today that are capable of 12 and 13 second timeslips in showroom stock trim than ever before, and most are doing it with MUCH smaller engines than the "musclecar" era. And get DOUBLE the gas mileage.

A STOCK C6 Z06 with drag radials as the only mod went 10.90's, it is verified on THIS message board.....to my knowledge there has NEVER been ANY production car EVER with a tire swap that ran in the 10's.

The musclecar era is now, I rest my case.

Sorry , still have to dissagree. When the True Muscle car era was here, all the manufactures produced some kind of a Muscle car. back in the day there were 427/425 hp 4 speed impalas, LS-6 Chevelles, Hemi Roadrunners, Gtx's,Darts, Big block Torinos, W-30 442s, buick GS stage 1, Camaros , Firebirds, Mustangs, Cudas, Challengers,Etc....Etc... Although the Camaro, Mustang, Cuda etc... were considered pony cars. hell even AMC was in the Muscle car game, Do you remember The Rebal Machine? lol...

Muscle cars were cheep back then. There were adds with catch phrases such as one for a 68 or 69 Dodge Dart( My memory escapes me) that read " 6000 RPM for $3000.00) and I think I remember another for a Charger that read " The one your mother warned you about" back in the late 60's and early 70's anyone could go into a dealership and buy a new TRUE Muscle car unlike today in order to buy a Z06 or a viper you need to morgage your home.

There is NO disput that a Z06 vette or a viper is a an amazing car but I dont think it was built as a Muscle car do do battle on the Drag strip. They are more of a World class Sports car.

I agree the Muscle cars of yesterday are inferior in handling, ride, comfort, gas milage etc... but that isnt what it was about anyway. I grew up driving most of the Muscle cars previously mentioned and to be honest my 2000 SS does allmost everything better except for raw power and the cool factor.

So where does that leave us today for Muscle cars? Ok well there is the corvette, the Viper, and well they are still building the Mustang, knock on wood they will actually bring back the Camaro but What else is there?? nothing.....

As previous said the Muscle car era died in 1974.

Again JMHO

Still rockin huh dude ? Thats great ! Oh yeah , it was Dyno Don Nicholson , may God rest his soul who also drove a Ford Falcon AFX car in the early 60's . Those were the glory days of street & drag racing like it will never be again.Us ole guys are fortunate to see it trying to make a comeback.
