Wide tires on a 72 Nova
In the June 2008 of Super Chevy magazine they put 275/40/17 Nitto 555 on a 17x9 inch rim with 5.75 inch backspacing. This was done on a 69 Nova with a CPP big brake kit and a 2 inch drop. Should fit a 72 just the same.
Then there is Detroit Speed who advertises up to a 315 width tire being possible using thier mini tubs, pn 040402.
I saw a Nova on Power Tour 2008 with this mini tub and it looked awesome!

I have 275/40/18 on mine and there's a finger's-width of room between the outside sidewall & outer (inner) fender, and to the best of my recollection there was still about an inch or more between the inner sidewall and framerails/leafs... I say do a 275 for SURE, maybe even a 285 or 295... I can take pics of the 275 fitment for you tonight...

These are a 275 on an 8" rim (ideally I woulda picked up a 9.5) with an equivalent backspacing of 4.375" on a drum rear end.
A piece of 1/4" MDF barely hangs in on the outside, and there's a constant 1" clearance all around the inside. I'd say if you were confident the rear wasn't going to float side-to-side too much, go with some more backspacing and do a 295 filling up the inboard side!!
If not, could stay conservative and do a 285 with 0.25" less backspacing to bring the rim inboard a bit more.
