Default 80s stock wiring, Dielectric Grease? or Goo?

Had some problems with the stock gauges and traced it down to the fire wall connector..

Took off the terminal block and it looks like a tar pit inside.. Black Goo Galore.. Im assuming it is or was a dielectric grease.

What the heck did they use back in the 80s for the firewall terminal block connection protection? I'm assuming it didnt look like this to start but after time changed?

It looked just like it does now, butnow, it's likely harder, and dried out, some.
I clean it out, check for problems, and reassemble w/ di-electric grease...NP.

Ok, thanks.. Yeah its not a big deal and I did exactly what you suggested..

Just wondered what this stuff looked like 24 years ago.. What the compounds characteristics were..

Stuff is nasty now.. Like you said it would be.. Harder.. Best way I could describe it now would be like hard asphalt tar.
