Another first start video '68 C-10 LQ4/T56
Yep, another first-run thread. I know lots of threads like this one got my *** off the computer and out into the garage, so what are you waiting for??? Get out there and get wrenchin'!
78,000 mi. 2004 LQ4
2003 PCM
New LS2 (243) heads
Lunati Cam:
2200 - 6800 GM LS VHRX278-12X 278/282 adv. 227/231 @.050 .651/.651 112/108 LSA/ICL
Lunati Pushrods
Truck intake, returnless fuel rail and 8.1 marine injectors - stock behind-the-seat gas tank, walbro 255 inline pump, corvette filter/regulator.
New oil pump, timing chain, LS7 lifters, MSD wires
T56 with 4.56's ready to go in - currently 3.73's
Wilwood master cylinder, AC delco slave cylinder, custom built hydraulic lines
Only thing changed in the tune was 1-bar SD OS, and flow/kpa for the bigger injectors.
About 6 months in the making with most man hours in modifying BBC headers to fit and working on the wiring harness and making all the wiring harness connections. Definitely spent more times on the things that I didn't think would take much effort.
I have to fabricate a shifter, tidy up some wiring, build my exhaust system (I have small case 3" magnaflows and X-pipe, just have to plumb it all together).
Enough details, here's the Vid:

Congrats. Very cool.
FYI - I'm using a stock hurst shifter handle out of a '68 Dart with my t-56 and bench seat. I had to make a small extension for the handle. It all kinda depends how how high and how far back you mounted your engine/t-56.
Also, depending on your t-56 ratios - the 3:73 might be a better option. I'm running the wide ratio Magnum/3:73 combo and first and second (and third) are very hairy with my 427... Anyway, I'd start with your 3:73s.
Give'r. I'll be curious to hear the Magnaflows.
Cheers,
Bovey

My engine is way far forward, so whatever you have might work for me too -
I'm guessing the exhaust will be pretty loud, the magnaflow I got are only like 16" long

Well, the 3.73's sucked at the track with a super T-10 that has the same 1st gear ratio as the T56. 4.11's don't seem like a big enough change. I should still be at like 2000 RPM in 6th gear at 75 MPH with the 4.56's, but you guys are making me a little nervous!

I didn't know you were planning on running it at the track. and Yeah with the 6spd the 4.56s on the highway won't be too bad. I think the rpms will be a little higher at 75mph, but you are probably running a decently tall tire out back so maybe not. It would definitely be a tire fryer with the 4.56 gear. lol
What is the hardest part about this swap? What motor mounts did you use? Stock truck pan work?

I used engine mounts from early classic enterprises, truck pan hangs 3/4" below front crossmember, but im not too worried about it.
Hardest part was converting factory mechanical clutch to hydraulic, since it has to be the perfect amount of throw. Thats the only thing I really did with my own ingenuity
Most everything else was pretty straightforward after research and careful planning.

Gear calculator @ http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/gear_calculator.html
shows 2129 RPM at 75 MPH with 4.56's and a 27" tire
with 3.73's at 75 MPH, it shows 1741 RPM
I rarely cruise at much more than 75, so I may be frying tires in 1st with the 4.56's, but I'm hoping to cut deeply into my previous best 60' time of 2.0x

Hey Jim, I'm running the same seat in my 71, it might be an '89, it was a long time ago...
I should be able to get some photos and measurents off my truck if that would help. I also have a spare hurst stick that I did not need. Again, I'll take some photos and if you like it we can work something out.
What was infront of your T-10? Check you 1 and second gear ratios with the 4:56s and make sure your not gonna run outta rpm too quickly.
1 quick T-A - I was amazed how easily my LSX/t-56 went in, I even reused the stock rad hoses. My biggest deal was finding a shifter handle I liked. And for high horspower, choose you clutch wisely, these trucks run around 4000lbs.
Bovey out.

I love that seat, prior to the engine/drivetrain swap, it was simply the best $10 I spent on the truck
I could use the stick! Even if it's not exactly what I need, it would be a start! If you have a pic or 2 of it might help.
1st gear at 6500 RPM says I'll be around 43 MPH (and estimates I'll have traveled 54 feet to get it to 6500 in 1st). That makes sense because with 3.73's and a Super T-10, I was WAY beyond the 60' mark (probably more like 90-100 ft. before shifting into 2nd.)
I'm running a Spec 3+ clutch.
I ended up using radiator hoses for the yr/make/model of the engine.
