Default Help hooking up a 5.3 power steering pump to Mustang rack and pinion

Can somebody give me a little help on hooking up a truck PS pump to a 96 Stang rack and pinion? Only thing I could come up with during a search was to use a valve that reduces the pressure from a GM pump to the Ford rack, but how do you connect the pump to the hose - the fittings are different. Custom hose???

ThankS!!

Yes you will either take the two ends ( the one to the pump and the one to the rack) and get a hose made at a hydraulic shop or look at different companies such as borgesson for the hose. They also carry the reducing valve you will need to reduce the pressure.

Thanks 87.

I was looking at the Mustang hose and the short stub left on the 5.3 PS pump - both measure 3/8. Think I could just install a union on those suckers??

Can you cut the two metal portions and weld or braise them back together? I have done this lots of times with power steering, fuel lines, even AC lines. I doubt you need to reduce the pressure. I have mixed and matched pumps and steering units lots of times, although I must admit I've never mixed Ford and Chevy.

Dont think I weld these cause I'd probably would blow through the metal - my welding skill are sub-par. Easy enough just to have a hose made if needbe. The power steering operates at high pressure I believe, dont want any leaks. Kinda wondering if the union is suitable for higher pressures - I think they are.

You could weld them or flare each of them and use tube nuts and unions. As long as they are rated for the amount of pressure it outputs. Me personally Id rather have an actual hydraulic shop make and crimp the lines. A lot safer in my opinion as they have the appropriate know how and tools. And the fox steering rack is not up to par to hold the pressure that the gm pump outputs thus the need for the reducing valve.

Put AN fittings on the pump and the rack and make your own from -6 JIC hydraulic hose.

I did AN fittings on mine to my rack. There are conversion fittings you can buy for both the rack and the pump then just run AN line in between the two.

Borgessen has some coversion parts. They say the GM pump operates at apprx 1500 psi and the Ford about 900-1000psi. Think the -an fittings are capable of handling these pressures???

Fittings? Absolutely. The AN line? I have no clue, but there are a bunch of folks on the vette forums that have done this same modification and I have yet to hear a complaint. That is actually where I got the idea as I am using a vette pump and front accessories.
